Again No. The feds get all of their money due no matter the level of state tax. Oddly California gets less entitlement money overall from the Fed then other states. That is California pays more to the fed then is sent back.

Don and SC it was not an odd claim and actually it was correct. You can deduct your state and local income tax from your federal taxes.
If you itemize deductions, you can deduct state and local taxes you paid during the year. These taxes can include state and local income taxes

California isn't the only state that allows that though....

Correct and its not the state that allows it it is the federal government that does ( for now) hence the taking money from the federal coffers analogy.

Re: California communities suing for polluters to pay for storm damage

It's only logical that the federal government allows you to deduct state taxes from your income, because that's money you don't actually get it's already been taken from you from the state. In California for example with close to a 10% state income tax. I believe the proper phrase is adjusted gross income or AGI.

Now the best way to go is a flat 15% flat tax on everyone with no deductions but that takes the power away from the politicians to give special carve-outs and brakes so you might as well forget about that.

Of course with the state of California having a pension crisis for state employees along with a ludicrous budget deficit that's been papered over with borrowing the state is just one incident away from Financial collapse.

Remember all that money all the states got in the financial settlements with the tobacco industry That was supposed to go to stop smoking programs that just went into their general fund the lawyers and state governments learned from that so now anyone with Deep Pockets that has fallen out of favor is a target.

GoingWalkabout, good to see you back with your ever so helpful and insightful comments.

Any one interested might like to read this article by one of the worlds brightest minds. Of course that is my opinion.

I always love claims by and about "scientists" and brilliant minds such as Al Gore's. Usually they are not scientists or particularly brilliant, typically wannabes, and backed up buy those seeking grants and other forms of revenue. The gullible among us and those motivated by money and fame fail (I think intentionally for most) to recognize the reality of global warming (and cooling) as cyclic natural occurrences (it seems the cycles tend to be quite long) and the influence, if any, and if so the degree to which man may contribute for probably the first time. Those with motivation (again, money and fame) are absolutely sure of both the influence of man and that the cyclic can be interrupted by making people suffer from guilt and deprivation, not to mention taxation.

Don...my apologies for missing your group!

Re: California communities suing for polluters to pay for storm damage

One doesn't deduct state/local taxes from federal taxes. One reduces federal taxable income.

California has both state sales and income taxes. But one can deduct only one or the other. Also, to be deductible, they (and other deductibles such as home mortgage and property taxes, etc. in total) must exceed the standard deduction.

California was once considered an island.

algores brilliance was in creating a universally accepted scam for making money roll into his pockets. opportunistic upon fears of people he created an issue from nothing.
we have seen much of this phenomenon in the recent past.
yes climate changes but taxing people for it...HAHAHAHA awesome scam
deferring responsibility is not merely a california thing. i have noticed it flying around everywhere of late.
