Second that. I awoke one morning to find a newly-arrived
boat emptying their lockers onto the
dock. They figured a rat had gotten into the potato chips but couldn't find it anywhere. Their boat had been up the river, and so they'd never heard the shrimp on the pilings.
Interesting side note on those shrimp - they hang around the pilings, and the "snap" is because their claws fire so fast they pull a vacuum in their joint, and what you hear is that vacuum imploding.
If your sound is a hum that's close to the 60 hz tone you hear from a bad stereo or
battery charger, it could be a
fish called a midshipman. They're remarkably loud for a small
fish, and they don't move around much. But they do turn on and off, with the hum lasting up to about an hour. You can find some recordings of them online.
