Bought First Boat . . . Thanks, CF !
Well, we have done it. We have bought that pit in the water you throw money in to.
We have been skirting around the edges of the forums gathering information without much input from myself. Mainly due to the fact that I can find the information I'm after in old threads.
So, i would like to thank you all for the discussions from current to old posts. Thanks heaps!!
Bought a 38" 1980 Hughes/North star S&S design. She's an oldy but hopefully gets us on the water and doing what we enjoy.
she'e sitting in Cairns and we are going to sail part way down the east coast as far as our work leave allow. From there we will get delivered to Melbourne. (we picked the good bit to sail).
Would like to hear about any first boat stories if you have one to share.
Thanks
Scott

Great boat, Well done! You do realize that every day at work will now seem like a cruel hell & you'll be checking your watches every 2 minutes for the last couple of work hours each day? You won't have a sound night's sleep for awhile because you'll be wondering if those dock lines are good enough & did you close all seacocks? You'll be waking each other up to discuss who locked the hatch & was the forehatch still open or are you sure you closed it, no, I thought you did.
Best of luck!

Mark,
Sorry 11.58 Metres. Never learnt feet and inches at school. I am used to something called the metric system. Maybe you guys will catch on to this concept one day.

My best friend and I were sailing my first boat--which was co-owned with my father--across a lake in huge air, rail down, when we were surprised by a gust that put the rail about six inches under water. We sank instantly.
Fortunately, the mast was still sticking up few inches out of the water. So my best friend swam to shore while I stayed with the "ship" to make certain we'd be able to find it when he got back.
My buddy borrowed his dad's boat, and we used it to winch my boat back to the surface. Towed it into the shallows and bailed it out. With buckets.
I didn't tell my dad about the sinking for at least ten years.

Thanks Bash and John,
Bash, I'm hoping not to do the same as you but sure to be a few "what not to do" stories in the future,
John, I set my mind on getting my own yacht after some sailing around Oahu.

Oahu is a great place to sail. Easy on the leeward side and gets a bit tougher as you head for Kaneohe. I'm glad you were able to sail there and enjoy it.
kind regards,

Mine was a 40 ft Alsmear(Danish) yawl, most beautiful boat you ever saw.No one told me it was broken at the stem, maybe thats why it cost 1800.00. Anyway was told I couldnt keep it at the marina,so I towed it to the middle of the river and it sank!! I cried like a man in love who had been bitch slapped(I was only 18 yrs.old),and then gathered my sinces and got the hell out of there!!they told me later that the powers that be were looking for the owner!! Since I didnt know the owner, what could I do? What could I do? I called him my paw and he called me his son I thru down my knife and he thru down his gun ...oh thats somebody else's story anyway good luck with your first boat, hope it turns out better than mine..DVC (true story)
