i'm equipped to s/v jedi's rules, except for the windlass; like rebel heart, it's manual. but i've never anchored in more than fifteen feet of water (florida/bahamas) so hand over handing the anchor and chain (45lb manson) the last fifteen feet isn't so bad, especially with the chain stopper keeping it from falling back in.

the more i read about all the problems on the left coast the more i feel good about cruising on the right coast....

Yeah but we get bragging rights over here. To get to "cruising grounds" on the west coast you need to get past Baja first. It's hardly Cape Horn, but it's ~1000 miles with only two all weather anchorages, near zero provisions, and funky coast line.

When I heard that east coast guys can gunkhole all the way down the coast then do an overnighter (if that) to get to the closest island outside of the US I almost spit out my Pacifico.

I am on the west coast but am an east coaster originally. Read Latitude. It's a much tougher time getting to the islands from the east coast than going down Baja.

svneko, the nearest foreign tropical island is 45 miles off the florida coast. and from then on you can see the next island from the one you're at....

I know that. But then you've got the thorny path if you want to get to the islands. I'm not talking about the Bahamas. But even there you get squalls and changeable weather. On the west coast its light wind or none. Like I said, read the Wanderer's take on it. And he's a big Mexico proponent.

I have a hard time believing that a 45 mile transit, which is half of what it took to get from San Diego to Santa Catalina island, is in any way on par with a 1000 mile trip that for most vessels takes a couple of weeks. Just the time out there is enough to get exposed to squalls, calms, whales, longlines, and lobster pots.

Ho,Ho Ho. Guess that you haven't ever tried going north along the west coast... anywhere! Or south for that matter!

It is true that the LA area down to SD isn't known for strong winds, but the rest of the coast surely had plenty of wind when I used to cruise there.

I haven't sailed on the east coast so I won't talk about it. I think that is a good plan for all of us...

I'm confused. I have stated many times that I think a windlass is needed even for smaller 30' boats, but I never say that it must be electric. Also, using a manual windlass or an electric windlass in manual mode, is not what I call hauling anchor by hand.

I've come to the windlass recommendation after 17 years of not having one on a 30 footer, followed by ignoring it on a 42 footer. The reasons are that even for light gear, during high winds and waves the forces can go up so much that you lose control without a windlass. I have had times that I could not pick up the anchor during a storm and this was during the years I was stronger than most other sailors.

The disadventage of a manual windlass is it's low speed. This triggers the impatient to raise hand over hand, which is okay in light conditions. Electric becomes a requirement for single handing and when we get too old for all that macho style

Forget about windlasses and chain for a moment--what's happening to the boat and the owner? Any chance of salvage?
