boat registration

When Is boat registration required? My boat is for sale people are asking where it is registered. It is not currently registered anywhere. It is for personal use only not comercial. I bought the boat in the Philippines and it is still located there.


Where and how can it be registered if necessary?

Depends where the boat is sailed.

Once sailed internationally, must be "flagged" with some nationality.

Just tell them (if true) that in the Philippines it is not required.

But you may find it sells better if you do it first?

For US citizens, the "documentation" process is through the Coast Guard.

As John says, it must be registered for international travel. Presumably it was originally sailed to the Philippines. If that was the case, then it would have to have been registered when it left wherever it came from and when it arrived.



Depending on where it was registered, it may still be on that register without you knowing since some registries do not require regular renewals and the boat will remain on it until someone actually notifies them to remove it.


If however, it was built locally, just tell prospective purchasers that it has never been registered. That may well be a selling point since you will not have to go throough the hassle of de-registering it anywhere.
