Part of winning over the bride to the "one day we will own a boat and sail" dream was to tell her she could decorate the cabin like a gypsy wagon. I've looked at gypsy wagon interiors, and they're -- busy.

I've tried to find inspirational sailboat cabins to share with her, but all I've found are too nautical. Surely there are some creative living spaces out there for the over 50-hippie gypsy wannbe?

The phrasing "like a Gypsy wagon" interior is imaginative and colorful, and as a professional artist I like to see things with color and creativity, including the interiors of boats.

I have seen a few boats that looked especially nice with interior design that was colorful and looked "lived in" and stylish too.

So often boats have rather plain or rather common decor (nautical themed "anchor" motifs on settee pillows come to mind).

The other day I came across a boat that made me think "hippie spirit lives here" or "arty folks own this boat." In any case, the boat is unusual, the interior decor is imaginative and looks much more "comfortable" and "personal" than most boats I see online (which are mostly empty boats for sale).

Here is a link. Take a look at the use of fabrics, rugs, color, artwork on the bulkheads (walls), etc. It reminded me of a Bed & Breakfast, with character. While the boat may not be typical, is not exactly my taste, it is the unusual aspects of it and the decoration of it that I found interesting and appealing for that difference.

In addition to this single boat, I suggest you visit the Pinterest site and search for the board there that is focused on Boat Interiors. It has many good examples (though many are of high priced new boats) of boat interiors.

Very true the boat was delightfully decorated..artist/painters perhaps..nice cozy "spots" use of layered space via curtains etc color and texture..touch of the arts and crafts style

If I lived in that area, I could LIVE on that boat, and can imagine a nice cozy cuppa tea by the wood stove with a good book in that "sun room" while the outside weather was foggy or raining, while my mermaid played the piano or violin.

The best example I have ever seen of using low cost solutions (basically paint) to "makeover" the interior of an old sailboat is found on the following blog. I commend that couple for taking a 1968 Allied Luders 32 boat that most would ignore on the sales lot and then completely changing the look and feel of the boat to a "new fresh" looking interior.

Their blog is worth visiting to see what a good eye for color, willingness to change things from the ordinary, and some sweat (DIY) can do to make improvements.

May I suggest a wagon-wheel chandelier? You might find one at Goodwill. Also, check out the great furniture options at Cabela's - moose antlers etc.

It's always a matter of personal preference whether some like it or not. I think it is in any case a bit dated but still comfortable.

The interior of "Nanaimo" is just plain ugly and has no consistent style. That would be a new project eventually!

The much smaller "Varuna" on the other hand looks maybe a little cheap, but is still quite pretty. The only mistake, the upholstery in the saloon, which act colourless compared to the forward cabin (nice pattern). A light blue upholstery with polka dots would have been more appropriate!

But certainly play also the old habits of the owner an equivalent role.
