Biscayne Bay Info

Heading to Biscayne for the first time with the intention of sail the Bahamas. Did some searching on this site and online but only found sketchy information. Would sure appreciate your views on good launch sites where I can also find a staging for two or three days. Would also like to find a reasonable secure storage area for my trailer and truck for two months.
Thanks in advance.
Cheers
Mike

Re: Biscayne Bay Info

Thanks for the greeting...Interesting you being from TB. For the last 15 yrs I spend a day in Thunder Bay before heading north to Nipigon. Usually spend 4 to 6 weeks sailing your north and east shore.Cheers Mike

Hard to find affordable long term parking near launch ramps in Miami-Dade.
You would be best to go south to Key Largo, Tavernier or Islamorada, launch and then park in one of the many storage lots or marinas down there.

Mike,
Google the town of Homestead, it's between Miami and Key Largo on Biscayne bay. Herbert Hoover and Black Point marina are right there on the south end of the bay close to your best jump off to Bimini. Homestead would be probably be the cheapest storage.

Matheson Hammock Park has gated Boat/trailer storage and a ramp. I'm not sure how much it costs, but i was at the Marina and it was very affordable for a transient slip. The Park is City owned.

Our favorite marinas in Key Largo is John Pennekamp state park marina
John Pennenkamp Coral Reef State Park
It’s very quiet and not expensive with very friendly stuff
And at night all park is yours!
and Marina Del Mare
https://www.marinadelmarkeylargo.com
Little noisy and sometimes there is boat traffic in Keylargo Chanel , but free breakfast and very good restaurant!

draft on entrance 5ft-6ft
In Marathon we like
http://www.faroblancoresort.com
Very good service and restaurant but little overpriced!
Draft 7ft-8ft

How about somewhere in Iowa?

Your choices around Miami will be open storage lots, or renting a closed storage area, i.e. one of the "Public Storage" type places. Probably two 10x20' storage bays, one for the trailer and the second for the truck. Between possible storm issues, and UV exposure (literally, they've had dashboards melt in the south) and the inevitable guys who jump over fences...if you go for an outdoor storage area, there are many, but it would be hard to find any that could guarantee security. SE Florida can be a rough place that way.

The storage bay places won't be cheap, if you pick one that is inconvenient to reach, so the rent is cheaper, it could still run you $500/month for the pair. But then again--at least the truck and trailer would be "out of sight out of mind" and behind another locked door, out of the weather.

Maybe place an ad locally or on CL, asking if anyone has a private garage they'd rent out for two months?
