Billing woes

I'm in a bit of a conundrum over a Boatyard bill. I watched as a technician repeatedly tried to fix a banjo fitting on my westerbeke. He tried using copper washers instead of the steel washers that fit into the recesses. Long story short I ended up buying a new part and installing it myself, solving the leak issue. Today I received a bill from the boat yard for $875 in billable hours for a problem they didn't resolve. I'm afraid if I don't pay it I will probably lose my Mooring but if I pay it I'm paying for nothing. Does anybody have advice on how to handle the situation?

Re: Billing woes

You wouldn't be paying for nothing. Pay the bill, you're paying for the man's hours he wasn't working on something else for them. If it's worth it to you, you could try to recover all or part of the money in small claims court. But the Biblical command, "the laborer is worthy of his hire" pertains in this case, and if you don't pay, you won't have a legal leg to stand on. Sorry his work didn't solve your problem, but glad you were able to do it for yourself. Good on you.

Re: Billing woes

Did you speak to the technician whilst he was struggling to fix it? If you did not like the job, should have taken photos and then gone to the yard manager/owner to complain, then fix it your self. At the moment you have nothing to argue your case other than "he said she said" it would seem.

Re: Billing woes

As said, the method is "pay then sue".

At times an honest conversation with the manager resolves the issue, or a part of it. Give it a shot before you sue.

A good option is to swallow the bill and never let the same specialist do anything on your boat again. If it is an option good for you, I will not know.

I would go and discuss. And I mean discuss not complain or scream and shout.

This isn't about me at all, but just to share, that in my own career in IT there have been a very few times we're my staff or I haven't been able to solve an issue. But it's only fair to charge for the labour.

And imagine if doctors only charged for success; they'd all be driving Corollas instead of Lexus.
