Best country to flag
I currently am flagged/registered in Panama.
Looking for a better country to register in which has little or no import cost, doesn't require you or your boat to be present and has a reasonable fee.
Panama's fees are getting out of hand.
Thank you for input..

Re: Best country to flag
What is your reason for using a flag of convenience versus your home country?

Canada works for me! If your boat is a NAFTA boat, then all you pay is sales tax. regsitration is $250 the first time and less for the renewal. no annual property taxes or "use taxes"on boats.

Is Malta still around?
Plenty of tax evaders used to have Malta registered boats.
I have also seen: Seyshelles, Caymans, Virgins, Deleware, and Belgium and Dutch (the last two mostly small private craft).
Simply browse the Yachting World or a similar posh magazine and see where the big toys are flagged. Then google.
Cheers,
b.

I found The Isle of Man was both incredibly efficient in handling enquiries, confirming available names and reserving an official number while awaiting paperwork and also what I thought was low cost. I believe it's open to owners from a wide range of current/former UK connected countries (UK, Aus, NZ, Can, US, HK, China, et al.....
Lachlan
P.S. In the end I didn't use them only due to the fact an Australian is required by law to be registered in Australia if leaving an overseas port - otherwise I would have used them.

Correct. Langkawi is an area in Malaysia.

Not quite sure what you mean here? By Australian do you or the boat. And leaving an overseas port or for an overseas port (from Australia).

Re: Best country to flag
So - There is no international law requiring that the vessel [pleasure] must be registered to a country, i purchased a Ketch year's ago in Singapore, went to the U S Embassy with the bill of sale and received a very impressive document with a seal on it, stating i was the owner, never had any country question the document or ask for any registration, probably not attainable in the states, but probably doable out of the country,i.e. U.S. citizen- U.S. embassy.

Re: Best country to flag
Without knowing where you intend to keep/use the boat no one can really answer the question.

Re: Best country to flag
My Boat is a USCG registered vessel.
Technically it belongs to the US Government.
The logic is that a foreign country is less likely to seize US Property. Like happened in Fiji during the Coup, where they seized all foreign vessels in their ports.
Another advantage is your home port can be anywhere in the US.
Billings Montana, Cheyenne Wyoming, Tucson Arizona ,,,, anywhere.
Not expensive to do.
