Neither of us were drug dealers either, but we didn’t live the fantasy of being Professional Sports stars or Move Stars or any other fantasy, we knew exactly what was ahead of us. I started out as a contract welder in the oilfield and then the oilfield fell apart and I joined the Army as a Private so we could eat.

Encouraging someone in something that that have less than a one in a million chance of pulling off isn’t doing them a favor, especially if they put all their hopes and plans into that fantasy.
As someone that also failed school at 15 and definitely did not come from any form of privedge, I 100% agree with the above.

I also agree with boatman regarding the commercialization of education, the indebting of young people while they study for useless degrees! Not only should older people risk being criticized for being politely "negative " they have an obligation to speak up IMHO regardless of whether it hurts people's feelings.

If you have an opinion, you run the risk of offending peoples opinions. That's how it is...

Political correctness prohibits the right to an opinion. Except that of the majority.

Re: Being more positive on CF

I will not agree.

I do not see this forum to have 'a personality of'.

Or am I looking elsewhere?

I see various people here, e.g.:

- the hipster with his 'come fund me' Instagram questions,
- the new sailor with his 'how do you become ...' questions,
- the sailoress with her 'how to get rid of my partner and find a sailing one ...' questions
- the owner of a cat with his cat mania questions,
- .... etc

Plus loads of interesting gadgets & events threads.

Can't see any single dominant personality.

Cheers,
grumpy old barnakiel

Actually the majority opinion is to be ridiculed and ignored if we listen to most of today’s media propaganda. People are so needy for attention that they feel they have to be “different”. Being “different” is so commonplace today that earlier traditional values (speak softly, ladies first, be nice, tattoos are ugly, etc.) are the new way to be different.

Wow, I thought most all young folks dreamed of becoming professional sports stars or movie stars or some such thing rather than a guy (or gal) with a boring 9-5 job. I never heard anyone actually encouraging young folks to seriously do that though

I barely got thru high school not because it was hard but because it was so slow and boring.

Then afterward you realize you have little chance of getting a decent job especially in a rural area like where I grew up. You could work on a farm, become a truck driver or delivery man something of this nature or join the military and hope your timing is good (no wars when you go in)

There if you are lucky they will discover during the testing whether or not you have some useful innate ability that can help them and you in the long run.

Then it's mostly a matter of the combination or luck and work whether or not you can succeed

As far as the negative comments, there are lots of them here on CF some by those that think they are being positive which is going to happen on any forum

It's up to the person on the receiving end as to how they will handle it. What I have found is that usually you can learn something if you consider all the points

And lastly, if your dream of becoming a professional sports star didn't come true there always sailboat racing!!!
