All it takes are a pair of HUGE BALLS.

(Sorry if anyone has already seen this. I did a forum search and couldn't find it.)

Re: BEHOLD!!! 80ft mast under 65ft bridge.

Wow! I've done the "Port Mayaka Limbo" in FL but I don't think I'd try a 15' difference! Takes more nerve than I've got!

Re: BEHOLD! 80' Mast Under 65' Bridge

That looked so iffy. Until I noticed the lines from the ballast bags to the foot of the masts which should stop them bags getting too far from the hull and tipping the whole lot over.
Did you notice the big ship following him through, looked like that had stopped, waiting to see if the channel had been obstructed.
But how did he get them out so far from the hull in the first place?

Re: BEHOLD! 80' Mast Under 65' Bridge

I've seen that several times on here but it was worth watching again. We have had several discussions on how to do that but people are wary of the idea so its good to see again. I don't think I would want to try it with a fat boat with light rigging though.

This is the comment from the fellow that posted the video:

"How to get an 80' rig through the 65' bridges of the Intracoastal Waterway using two tons of water. The balls get swung out with an initial turn to port or stbd. The tendency then is for the roll to continue by itself, but is controlled by letting the bags out slowly with a line made off to each bag and running through necessary tackle to a cockpit winch."

I would much rather go outside myself.

I take the closing caption to mean the Captain died in 2010. Sad.

Definitely that took balls to do.

Re: BEHOLD! 80' Mast Under 65' Bridge

I did the same thing using my crew members as counter weights when I ran aground near "stilts ville" in Hawk channel, south of Key Biscaine. It worked great! I had them walk out on the boom then into the bosuns chair to get laid over far enough to clear the coral head I was on - damn near capsized but we got off with no damage!
AIN'T SAILING FUN???!!!!

Excellent seamanship. A true example of what would never be taught in any sailing class, but that can only be learned from example, calculation, and application. Great post.

One upmanship.
40 meter maxi under 9 meter bridge.

The OP's vid was posted on my club's email list and another person posted this as a followup.
