I am not a fan of US media. One of my big complaints is the lack of reporting on world issues. Today I have heard multiple sources talking about the Australia wild fires. That means it must be really really bad.

I don’t have friends over there. It know there are many readers here from that corner of our world.

Thanks Gtstricky and yes it is bad.

We in Oz are used to bush fires (wild fires) and we are used to bad ones and occasionally (every few years) we have a really really bad one somewhere. The worst ones get names like Black Tuesday, Ash Wednesday, the 67 fire etc and these are burnt into our psyche.

But this season they are beyond rational description. Whole communities burnt out, many lives lost, thousands of buildings gone, people sitting on the beach watching their towns burn, Navy called in to evacuate thousands of people.

Yes, it is an horrific time for many and already there has been months of fire somewhere in Oz and the traditional fire season is only just starting.

Still, collectively we will rise from the ashes like always.

CNN has been reporting all along in Indonesia. Fires first started in July. So 6 months ago, and still going.

It is awful bad in Oz, maybe unprecedented in absolute terms, certainly worse than any before because of population growth and sprawl. It's getting plain that some places may become uninhabitable due to 'that which may not be mentioned'.

May y'all come through it as well as possible.

I live in a similar region that is sometimes subject to wildfires, and have gone on fire watch; but not like that, yet. Been near many cane field burns, flames 100'+, scary, noisy, baaadazz stuff. Those news reports never seems to capture that gawdawful noise of a huge blaze.

On Friday morning local time, HMAS Choules started the evacuations of nearly 1,000 of the 4,000 people stranded on the beach in Mallacoota, a coastal town in far east Victoria. They have been stranded since Monday night. Each round trip could take a day or more. HMAS Choules is expected to make two or three voyages over the coming days

Not sure which US media source you've been listening to, but it seems the Australia fires have been in my news feeds for weeks now. Maybe the visual of people stranded on a beach plays better with some, but the truly horrifying magnitude of it has been reported widely. It's these extreme areas (i.e., very dry or very wet) that are also going to see the worst in the future. It seems to be the new normal and I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around that.

The winters are to cold for cane toads down there mate.

It was inevitable that we would experience more severe bush fires:

More and more poorly managed national parks being allowed to become overgrown and consequently accumulating massive fuel loads.

Less and less forest products extraction industries and consequently vast areas of un-managed forests probably without proper fire breaks and a massive loss of forest management skills as well as jobs.

More tree changers moving into forest areas. We know how to build bush fire resistant housing and what is required to prevent or at least mitigate property damage.

Only 1% per year of preventive, managed forest burn offs Australia wide. That's a 100 year cycle of fuel management activity.

We have reaping what we have sown. Ignore history and you'll be it's victim.
