Re: Anyone living on the north van isl?
I'm 2/3 of the way up, in Campbell River
It's been 3 years since I visited Sointula , nice wharfs, friendly staff, managed by the local lions club as I remember
Lots of absentee owners keep their boats there as it is cheap moorage
Raining here in CR tonite, not into freezing conditions yet
Hows the weather in Saskatchewan?

Re: Anyone living on the north van isl?
I did not have time to check things out properly the last time I was there I was dropping off the companies 75ft fishing boat to the local shipyard for bottom paint and steamship inspection
It was a few years earlier I stayed for a few days
A bit of a walk from the wharf to the local co-op , nice place in the summer , better atmosphere than Alert Bay
There were a few locals doing wooden boat repairs , steaming boards to bend them
Nice quality work
Few shipwrights left that can work on wood boats these days

Re: Anyone living on the north van isl?
I've not been to Sointula, except as a quick stop in the Alert Bay ferry but I love the North Island! I have many friends in Alert Bay, the 'Namgis First Nation are an amazing community with a rich cultural history. If you can get an invite to festivities at the big house, they are not to be missed! Many of the First Nation communities there have the same issues post residential school and colonization that plague aboriginal communities the world over though. They are working on it though and are making progress.

Re: Anyone living on the north van isl?
ditto with the thread drift. Spent a few days in Alert Bay in the early 80s, the community was close knit and quite prosperous with fishing the primary industry. Enjoyed the townsfolk a lot, and always meant to go back. Sorry to hear the community has fallen with the decline in the fishery.

Well so far, so good. Only been here a couple of weeks so don't know much about the place yet though. Ya I'm working for Chevron, hauling fuel out to the bush. Seems like a good job and good people too. I think I'm going to like it here.
Looks like you'll be going from Ituna to catchin' tuna eh. lol

Re: Anyone living on the north van isl?
Yes its mine (well mine and the bank's). We were Victoria 2 summers ago for the Lagoon rendezvous. We are based out of Vancouver. Thought you might get a kick out of the boat name.

...I'm happy to be able to buy fuel in Alert Bay again. I had to pack jerry cans (less than?) a 100 yards to the dinghy but that's no problem.
I've always liked the town to go for a walk along the seawall, get grub and whats-its at the hardware and the museum is great. The anchorage is pretty good too.
