Re: America’s Cup - ETNZ launches 1st AC75 (new)

LR 3 seconds ahead at gate 4. But they still seem to have the strategic advantage

Ohhh nooo - LR sailed into a small hole, 18 sec behind TNZ at the final gate. Commentators (including Dean Barker) are saying that's down to better local knowledge.
Half way down final leg, NZ 460 meters ahead.

ETNZ 6. Fantastic race, LRPP lost with honors; NZ just faster boat.

Who the heck picked that shift on the right side of the course on leg 5? Wow, the pass and the race to TNZ. Real bummer for LRPP leading the entire race to that point and two brilliant moves - especially the first leeward mark.

Commentator, perhaps smartarsely, is calling it the "Ngapipi Road" (wind) shift. That road is around 2.5km upwind of the southern end of this course, on the other side of the Waitemata Harbour. I don't see that race as boat speed. They're even enough. It's skills.

Why didn't LR cover at that last upwind split when they were ahead?

Slightly less wind (9-10 knots) just before race 10. Right top corner favoured, shifts to 20* right now. Could be a SW filling in - that would be a left shift. TNZ has their J2 up, LRPP J1 or J2.
