2021 America's Cup: Stars and Stripes Team USA fail to pay entry fee to contest opening World Series event

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/new...ectid=12305511

Quote:
Stars and Stripes Team USA look increasingly unlikely to compete in the 2021 America's Cup in Auckland.

The US team, co-founded by Mike Buckley and Taylor Canfield, failed to pay an entry fee in time to contest the opening America's Cup World Series (ACWS) regatta in Italy.

According to a Notice to Competitors dated last Monday , only four of the five teams - American Magic, INEOS Team UK, Emirates Team New Zealand and Luna Rosa - had paid the entry fee of US$300,000 ($463,000) for the ACWS regatta in Cagliari, Sardinia.

The Long Beach Yacht Club team do not have a completed AC75, and won't have a boat to sail in either the April or June ACWS regattas.

Stars and Stripes Team USA are understood to have attracted three substantial sponsors, one of which is a major technology player who also has a relationship with Team New Zealand, Sail-World NZ reported.

With the Protocol for the 36th America's Cup stating that "each competitor shall be required to enter and participate in all events of the ACWS," Stars and Stripes, will no longer be eligible to participate in either the Christmas Race or the Challenger Selection Series, unless there is a rule change, and they can guarantee to have an AC75 in Auckland.

Unlike the 2017 America's Cup in Bermuda, the ACWS regattas carry no points into the Challenger Selection Series, Prada Cup challenger series or the America's Cup in Auckland next year.

Should Stars and Stripes fail to cross the start line in the first ACWS event, however, their only hope would hinge on Team New Zealand and Luna Rosa agreeing to a Protocol change to allow the team to be exempted from participation in the first two events.

For the ACWS exemption to be granted, it's likely that Stars and Stripes would have to provide substantial undertakings and be ready to race in Auckland. They will also have to pay a further US$1million Entry Fee and US$1million Late Fee as well as post a refundable Performance Bond of US$1million.

Meanwhile, further details have emerged around the upcoming World Series regattas – the first time fans will witness the new boats in racing action.

The first three days of the regatta will consist of a round-robin competition, with all four teams scheduled to race each other twice.
Race winners will score one point and losers, zero. On the final day, the bottom two teams will face off for third and fourth while the top race in a first-to-two-points final.

The world series regattas start in Cagliari on April 23-26 and continue in Portsmouth, England (June 4-7) and Auckland (December 17-20).

America's Cup: Luna Rossa drops rig in Sardinia
by Richard Gladwell Sail-World NZ 28 Jan 08:18 AEDT
28 January 2020

https://www.sail-world.com/news/2260...ig-in-Cagliari

Italian America's Cup challenger, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli has dropped her rig while training in Cagliari, Sardinia.

The incident happened after both the British team and the Italians had been off the water for several days, due to strong winds and there was still a substantial sea state according to local media.

"The event took place off Capitana on a beautiful Mistral day around 15 knots", reports SailingSardinia.it

"The Mistral which finally made its appearance in the Golfo degli Angeli after a week of strong Scirocco whose big waves prevented the sea going out for AC75 of Luna Rossa (but also of Ineos)," says an auto-translation from the Italian sailing website.

"This afternoon, during a sea trial, the AC75 "Luna Rossa" dismantled a few miles from the coast in front of Marina di Capitana," Luna Rossa said in a media statement. "No team member was injured in the accident. The mast, sails and equipment were immediately recovered by the sailors on board, with the help of the shore team crew on the assistance boats."

"The whole team is already working to get back into the water as soon as possible and resume the training sessions in preparation for the America's Cup World Series debut to be held from 23 to 26 April."

Windstrength was reported by a weather station at Cape Carbonara, the nearest station to the incident showing winds increased in the morning to average 25kts from the SW around noon before easing slightly later in the afternoon. The elevation of the station is not known - which can be a factor in windstrength readings. It does explain the difference in sea state in some images as the breeze moderated during the afternoon.

Sail-World understands, confirmed by Italian sources said to be in contact with the team, and it would also appear also to be confirmed by the images, that the D-section spar did not break and that there was no damage to the rigging. The spar is to a shape restricted by the AC75 with a minimum laminate specified, however teams can add to this specification if they wish. The rigging is a one-design supplied package and it will vital for that package to be cleared of any blame for the incident.

Currently the issue has been identified by a forestay chainplate failure - which is feature that is unique to the Italian boat and was designed and manufactured by the team or a supplier.

If the spar is not broken the team is expected to be back sailing well before the America's Cup World Series in Cagliari in two and a half months.

Ok, was against the nz test boat . But at least the Americans are back on the water and sailing in NZ, so there will definitely be a race

First of all, these boats are 75' long. Go down to your nearby marina and look at a 75' boat and imagine that 6 feet up in the air going 50 knots.

Secondly, this is not what the rich guys are doing. Each of these teams is backed by corporations (in some cases, governments). The money and expertise required is more than even the richest people would be willing to put up themselves.

But that is what it seems to take to be at the peak of sailing competition. It's OK in my opinion altough I rather liked watching the 70' foot monohills sedately crossing tacks in the old days.

But this, this is something else.

My bad, I just quoted the headline:

'After being airlifted 9,000 miles from the factory, the 45-foot sailing racer exceeded...'

But they are 75 feet, indeed.

Only 7 knots of wind and 43+ knots boat speed according to our chase boat’s speedo. Gonna be huge to see the boats racing.

We’ve registered our boat with the America’s Cup organisation as a spectator boat. We’ll move the big TV onto the boat running the telecast, have two monitors showing the online stream, and someone who doesn’t care about the racing to steer our boat and look out for other boats.

Bow down is apparently faster as it minimises the air flow under the hull.

The photo was taken a few months ago. It will be interesting to see boat TNZ #2 and what changes they’ve made.

Given that both AM and TI designed their 2nd boats as skiffs with keels and have abandoned the scow concept, and LR progressed their skiff, it looks like all four 2nd boats will be relatively close in basic shape.

We're all waiting to see TNZ's new boat.
