Thanks for the responses. I always wondered about that chime.
Regarding the scrubbing off excess speed, I just got done watching the movie Apollo 13.
I'm glad we don't have to look out the window of a commercial jet during approach and watch the flames from a heat shield!

I'm glad to see this thread has finally "taken off" with the airplane community. Bad pun, couldn't resist. I'm frozen in for the winter, cant fly or sail. Cheers everyone.

I played a lot of flight sims as a kid and when I first started flying I had a LOT of trouble keeping my eyes 'outside the cockpit', apparently this is common to flight-simmers.

I feel it helped when I was doing my IFR though
