Re: Adrift, the movie

Saw this movie last night.

Granted, Iím a wannabe sailor (Iíve been surviving on rations of Yachtword and CF for the past 5 years), but I just couldnít understand why anyone would sail that area in October.

Am I missing something? Entirely possible since I know nothing. Seems borderline suicidal.

Re: Adrift, the movie

I saw the movie and liked it.....and I'm hard to please. I found the shifting time frames the only way to tell this story.

If it was an easy sail in good weather, the owners would have made the trip themselves, instead of hiring a delivery skipper.

While boobs (and everything else) are unaffected by gravity in orbit, the laws of momentum still apply. A brick may be weightless but you'd not want it tossed at your head. Any woman with sizeable boobs will explain to you what happens when they turn quickly, or how they must avoid corners and edges. If I were a woman I think I'd wear sports bras exclusively and to hell with fashion.

I'm hard to please, but I thought "Adrift" was one of the better sea-going movies I've seen. I was not disappointed.

Re: Adrift, the movie

This movie appeared on iTunes just recently (in Finland)! Going to watch it today but I'm afraid it might give me nightmares

(I haven't had any sailing related nightmares in a long time but when I sailed more before, my subconscious produced this recurring dream where we're going forward with good speed when I suddenly notice we're in the middle of a belt of semisubmerged rocks )

Re: Adrift, the movie

Yes, it was really good!

EDIT: Far better than the Redford movie, I thought. It should have a higher IMDb rating

Doubt it very much if there is any quick motion in a space station. I am glad you are not a woman.

Re: Adrift, the movie

For some reason most boaters in British Columbia coastal waters didn't have radios in the early and mid eighties. I have been reading older Pacific Yachting magazines and radios back then were expensive and some only had 12 channels available according to adverts, and these models in today's dollars, just did a conversion, sold for $2300.

A buddy of mine single handed his 37 CT over 45 days at sea with no radio back in the mid eighties.

Re: Adrift, the movie

Finally got around to watching this the other day. All the obvious things as shown above, but certainly the actual post-storm shots below decks were particularly good. The film shows the skipper knowing very little about how to sail and Tami even less, but that’s all been hashed over above.

Fortunately, my wife actually quite liked the movie. I half-wondered if it would turn her off sailing forever, as I know that finding me missing on deck is one of her nightmares. But no, she was just shouting “why aren’t you clipped on?”, “why do you have those sails up?” at the screen...

Also, as she is a vegetarian too, she was wondering why preparations for a 30-day voyage included tins of sardines and spam and not a lot else...

Us too. And yes, we wondered about a boat provisioned for two people for a month running low on food with one person aboard for 40 odd days.

I'd have to figure that a lot of their non-canned food would have been ruined by seawater contaminated by whatever was in the bilge.

And I hate to think how much mold would have been growing, below decks, after a week or two...
