No Vargas was in Esquire magazine and was the primary inspiration for most of the WWII nose art. I used to paint repro leather bomber jackets back in the day, all well researched and as authentic as possible. My favorite that I never sold is a Vargas Der Gross Assvogel a B-17 of the (I think) 401st bombardment group 8th Air Force who used a strip in East Anglia that as a kid I flew RC planes off. Lost with all hands on a mission to bomb the submarine pens at Willhelmshaven.

Its a play on words, assvogel is vulture so it could be big vulture, or big ass bird (bird brig English slang for young lady).

Vargas often used his wife as a model, like Kandinsky and Dali.

Very interesting FlightLead - thank you for the thoughtful reply.
I knew Dali used his wife in his art, but always associated Kandinsky with more abstract art.
My late fatther-in-law landed on Normandy on D~Day +6 and was captured in the Battle of the Bulge. My late father fought on the Eastern Front as a partisan. The German sub pens had very high bomber priority during WW2. Some of the earliest semi-drone aircraft were in development to bomb the sub pens, besides penetrator bombs like Tall Boy.
Where did you market your bomber jackets? I just had a local Mexican folk artist paint my dinghy outboard motor top. A painted leather jacket would be cool.

Re: A Cap for Yachting

I think the guy on the right looks the part with this genuine German Navy Cap given to me by my German friends Klaus and Miho. However I'm usually not game enough to wear it in public. I don't think he'd been at the helm of anything else in his life but it looks good. My hat is much more practical in cool weather.

Well early on in his career he was a bit more representative. But he actually used his wife to model various poses that look a bit like ballet positions to me, then copied the curves and angles. e.g. some of the black lines in Gelb, Rot, Blau.

Very cool about the drones, did not know that.

My grandfather was in the British Army chasing Rommel around North Africa, and as part of the occupying forces in Split, and Italy. On my mum's side my great uncle flew Mossies. Interesting missions too. His Mossies were unarmed, painted black, and he only flew at night. Only got the full (?) story at the end of his life. Apparently he was flying and landing behind enemy lines, dropping off and picking up people and supplies. Got shot down by an FW-190 returning from a mission, spent 2 days in a ditch with a round in his hip before being found.

I didn't really "market" the jackets that much. I knew some warbirds guys, wore some jackets at airshows and flyins, and kept getting asked. Haven't done anything like that in years though.

If we're going to have fancy hats, do I now also need a matching silk scarf a la Thurston Howell III ?

Cruisers have always had a reputation for being fashion-forward sartorial enthusiasts. Peruse any copy of Latts and Atts you find laying around and prepare to be inspired. OP has certainly come to the right place!

Re: A Cap for Yachting

This is fun for the hair challenged. I most often wear it to new member meetings at my sailing club. I've had several people stare trying to figure out if that is really my hair, and others have asked me if it's my hair. A few people who know me go there's something different, I can't figure it out, then break out laughing when they figure it out.

Silk scarfs are for posers, real yachtsmen wear tasteful silk shirts.

Ascot I think? Why not, if looking as if you have money, go for it. I've always found the guy on the dock that looks every day may be able to buy everybody.
Nothing to prove or no one to impress.
