I don't see that. Era of the RAS. The flap down the back might be protection, but probably hotter than hell.

The French Foreign Legion spent many years in the desert. That's where the flap comes from. Their motto was "march or die". If you couldn't keep up. you were left behind.

It is not simply the hat, but the effect for which the entire outfit is designed.
Please google the artist Gil Elvgren and Nautical for examples of correct attire.
Happy trails to you.

I believe Gil Elvgren also did classic cheesecake/nose cone art.

Was that the attire (or 1940’s-50’s level of lack thereof) what you had in mind?

I suspect he had in mind these fine examples of appropriate attire to go with the OP's cap:

Not quite as popular as Alberto Vargas, but they probably all have the appropriate number of fingers.

(AV dashed his off quickly sometimes and several of the girls have extra digits)

Vargas did work in Playboy, no? Vargas is more 60’s to me, Elvgren was late 40’s-50’s I believe.

A more contemporary comic artist (far raunchier) is Julius Zimmerman. A lot X-rated, but you can still see the evolution from the classic comic artists.

So, I've got the fancy hat but "it just looks silly on an old guy in shorts on a boat." said the wife.
Thank you for your service Ted.
