most boats on yw that donot sell are taken of the market and sold independently.
as for your offer no more sentence---have you tried to purchase or price a beautiful ct 56 lately???? they are built in 1970s. by your standards, all the gorgeous oldies with retentive value should be crushed. is not a wise statement. you could be correct about the much smaller boats (under 30 ft) that should never have reached yw, but not the goodies and classics and genuine antiques with retained value.

There are exceptions but scrap lead value is a good starting point for negotiations. (you could even have a friend loosen em up with a real lowball offer)

I know everyone's entitled to their opinion especially on the internet, but that statement is just absurd and misleading for the uninformed. Here's a list from YW of sailboats in North America older than 20 years and listed at over $100,000 .... there are almost 1,000! And you think they are all worth only the value of the lead in the keel?

Of the 914 boats you are referring to, only 28 have a sale pending status. Thats 3%. Lets assume the "sale pending" status boats are posted for a month. At that rate it would take 2.7+ years for all the listed boats to sell If no other boats came on the market in that time frame. If you have a boat for sale and someone makes an offer, take it!!!!

That's an entirely different approach than offering only the value of the lead in the keel don't you think?

Two years ago I sold a 1983 31' monohull for about 80% of the price listed on YW, which was a lot more than the keel value. It was listed for about 6 months.

From the responses I think it is safe to assume a lot of people are concerned with the value of their boats. They should be!!!!!!!!

Re: Yachtworld Asking Prices VS Actual Sale Price - or What is the Markup ?

Figures from soldboat.com:

Criteria -
*Sales for last 12 months (May 2011 - 2012)

*Sailboats between 50' and 20'

*Sailboats older than 20 years

*Sold for over $100,000

TOTAL SOLD - 289

Based on current market listings of 914 one could make a case that 1/3 will sell in the next 12 months.

P.S. Most boats sold on YW never get a "sale pending" listing. They are just sold and taken off the list.

Nobody will argue with that statement, but it's a far cry from your opening post.

25-35' -- 16

36-50' -- 273

If you look at sales under $100,000 the total goes to 3,130.

Re: Yachtworld Asking Prices VS Actual Sale Price - or What is the Markup ?

I think it should be noted the sell price reported by the broker and the actual sell may not be the same. Just look up and compare the BUC value with the NADA value and you will see a huge difference. Both reportedly use actual sell figures. By the way, only use NADA values when shopping for a boat.

Generally speaking, asking prices are inflated by 25-30% in this market. There are some exceptions, but not many.
