Re: Would this scare you away from purchasing the boat ...

Wouldn't scare me away but I would be getting a better handle on that soft spot in the deck, and having a real good look at that shafting for corrosion, the crap on it in front of the packing gland could just be salt but it looks like someone used regular steel washers under the stainless nuts that hold the fitting on to the shaft log, that's a no-no! You have a little battery going on there between the bronze and the steel, there doesn't seem to be any shaft-brush, so what's protecting the shaft and propeller, a shaft zinc I hope. Neither problem is a deal-buster per say, but how many other things are"not quite right?" Usually if a simple screw-up like the wrong washers on the packing gland haven't been rectified by the present owner, the rest of the vessel maybe similarly neglected to the point where either you get a real good price and you fix what needs fixing or you walk away and look at more boats. Lots of boats for sale!

Be careful. The shaft is not only a problem, but it also shows a lack of maintenance. Makes me wonder about how well other maintenance has been done. Since you indicate that this is new to you, get expert advice. Get a good surveyor. Find one that has a reputation for being very picky, and wants to go over everything with you. Be prepared to walk away if the $ doesn't make sense (or cents!), but be sure to calculate how much repair needs to be done, and estimate that cost. Work that into your offer.

Thank you everyone for your replies. This forum is a goldmine!

I have spent countless hours researching on the internet and talking to brokers. I have checked out 7 boats this week, and with each one I learn a little more.

We are planning to make an offer on our favorite this weekend.

If your choice is this one let us know what the surveyor tells about that.

This boat sounds like it's overdue for a refit. If you are prepared to catch up on all the neglected maintenance, only then pay a surveyor.
