Actually, the reason is it is so expensive is that the price point is set by the intersection of the marginal cost curve with the marginal revenue curve!

In essense a function of what it cost to supply it and what consumers are willing to pay. Lower the production cost and see a reduction in cost. Stop buying it, see a reduction in cost. Pretty simple microeconomic theory!

Wanna cut your fuel bill in half? Spend twice as long in each anchorage. Wanna cut it by two thirds? Spend three times as long in each anchorage. This also doubles or triples the chances of getting a fair breeze to sail on.

Plus you also spend what you save in marina costs.
I see on the new's, that used vege oil is now being stolen from business in the US by those trying to make biofuel. They said that the old vege oil has gone from US .76cents/gal to US $2.36/gal.

June 1st I filled 20 5gal jugs at a local station that sells offroad deisel. It was $4.19 a gal. That was here in NE Florida. June 6th I went to Miami Beach Marina, and paid $5.50 I think per gal. In Staniel Cay, the Exumas, I paid $6.25 a gal for deisel on June 14th. I was surprised it was not even more in Staniel Cay!

Have been meaning to get back to this thread.

Note that their prices would be cheaper if you have an economical paint job & fitout[1]

If you want an alloy hull (vs steel), then obviously its going to be more expensive. Although steel requires periodic painting, there are places that you can get that done (incl sandblasting) economically (i.e. Malaysia, Columbia etc).

If you want to reduce the cost further, then perhaps an option may be to get a builder to complete the hull, painting, engineering, plumbing etc. You would then have a basic functioning motorboat, of which you could then finish the house electrics & interior.

In the US, I've read that these hull's have also been assembled by Custom Steel Boats & Townsend Bay Marine.

If you get a design done & a cnc (computer numeric controlled cutting file to create a kit), then you've got more options as to where to build. It really becomes a question of quality of workmanship & ensuring that the steel quality is certified.

Thai-Kiwi Marine (Thailand (but operated by Kiwi's)) will assemble a kit like they do with Bruce Roberts kits (you can source your own steel provider, have it precut (cnc file) & delivered to the yard).

On a personal note, I prefer the rugged (but clean & tidy) look, why? Because its less maintenance & less costly to repair when something happens (i.e. scratch paintwork, bump against wharf etc). Also, the extra $$$ saved can be put into other investments towards operational costs.

[1]
Exterior: No fairing (on hull) & flat paint (no high gloss & polish). Use deck paint & silicon sand (vs teak deck tread)
Interior: No full teak (only paint & maybe teak trim)
Engineering: You could possibly consider a rebuilt main & tranny (vs new ones)

Call Your Congressman to Raise Gas Tax! ~ by Norman A. Shultz

“... how about a new proposal floating around Congress to raise the federal tax on gasoline by 55% and diesel by 42%. Apparently Congressman James Oberstar (D-Minnesota) or Congressman Peter DeFazio (D-Oregon) think it’s a good idea. Oh, sure it is . . . what with energy already sucking the life out of most American’s discretionary income these days, Congress can just add a little more pain! ...”

Need more information.

The claim is that rising gas prices will cause less gas to be consumed, leading to an overall loss of revenue that is slated for road infrastructure.

Since it is logical that road wear is not strongly correlated to fuel efficency (assuming less efficent cars are 1:1 replaced with more efficent ones), this may be a logical argument. I need to see numbers.

When you post a link you don't need to cut and paste the article. AP material is always copyrighted. We don't need their lawyers posting here uinless it's about boating.

Look at it this way, when the newspaper prints an AP story they always attribute it properly but they also write a check to AP for the service. AP likes to get paid when you publish their material. While they expect both the money part counts a little more.

Links of course are always free. Linking to appropriate material is encouraged here. Adding links to a post makes it more complete.
