USVI considered US for insurance?

Hi all
I know this sounds strange but I never knew the hardest part of our upcoming purchase was obtaining insurance! I’m currently about to have a haul out survey done on a boat we plan on purchasing in next few weeks. It’s in the USVI.

I’ve always thought of the USVI as the US. One the policy quotes I received limits me to within 125 nm of US coastline. If true, that’s fine to get started but then severely limits what I can do with that policy.

Thoughts anyone? Plan was/is to sail around Caribbean and get south to Grenada for hurricane season. It looks like a probably need an insurance company more local to Caribbean than the US companies Im dealing with.

Thx!

Rick

Re: USVI considered US for insurance?

All the policies I've had are very specific in terms of the geographic area they cover. Generally, there is a large premium to be south of ~30°N from June 1 to Nov 1. There are typically Caribbean countries, such as Cuba & Haiti, that excluded from coverage.

Susan Waters, susan@marineinsurance.cc, was very helpful getting me competitive policy quotes.
