Re: UPDATE: Reduce Offer After Survey?

Did the repair include dropping the keel and repairing the area, then reattaching the keel? If it didn't then the repair is substandard.

I would either get a quote for a proper repair, if not accepted, then walk away. Could be a dangerous situation.

Its an encapsulated keel, so there is no dropping it and reattaching.

We have agreed on a repair allowance, and repairs are proceeding to our specifications, which included a layup schedule at least as good as the original.

...this is the sort of "expertise" that you get if you ask the internet! Can't tell a bolt-on keel from an encapsulated one

The one you are referring to, I bet, is Cheeki Rafiki, which was lost with all hands when the keel separated. The courts determined that the owner, not Beneteau was at fault for not properly maintaining the boat and failure to make repairs after several groundings. Might apply here also, as the repair appeared to be cosmetic and not structural. If you look at the ISAF special task force report on keel failures, Beneteau faired very well. Most failures were on custom racing boats. While a fin keel is obviously more susceptible to failure than a full keel, if you exclude fin keel from consideration you are eliminating more than 90% of all boats out there cruising the world.

Yeah, I agree. I hit bottom very hard a couple of times in my 6'-5" draft Passport 47. I'm talking about "bang, dead stop" from 4.5-5 knots! The result? scraped bottom paint.

I said it before, I'll say it again. He's been less than honest with you, I wouldn't trust him, walk away.

Congratulations on your new (to you) boat! I'm curious if you have taken pics of it being sanded and faired out? Boats are always an adventure, usually its when your sailing them but sometimes on land as well. Ours certainly is!

Re: UPDATE: Reduce Offer After Survey?

Sadly, we walked. As repairs continued, it appeared that more of the keel had been damaged in the past, and we were not able to agree on the nature of the repairs needed.

So we're looking again.

Dave, sorry about the boat, but much better now than having nagging doubts in the back of your mind when sailing in some heavy weather. Always an emotional investment when you get to where you were in the buying process, but keep looking and Spring will be here soon...much better weather to crawl around on more boats! thnks

In fact, you should be quite happy you’ve taken the right decision.

Your future boat is still waiting for you.
