To Register or License?

We are buying a boat in Croatia, will sail the Mediterranean for a year and then either leave the boat there, bring it to Vancouver, or take it to the Caribbean. There is no legal requirement in Canada to register it but we can do so on a voluntary basis. For our purposes does anyone have any insight regarding what is better? Will European customs recognize a licensed but no registered boat? Thanks! Marina

I kept mine in the registry because I was told that it is always possible that crossing into the states they would ask for it although they don't usually. With a registered boat you can get a mortgage although I have no intention of doing that myself. It is easier to change the name on a licenced boat and licensing is cheaper. On the other hand if you register you become part of the queen's fleet and it is always possible she will call you to duty. I can see the headline "HMSV Honeysuckle strikes fear in the hearts of mighty warships". Well, maybe not.

These links may be of some help:

(1) Pat's Boating in Canada: Licensing vs. Registration;

(2) Small Craft - Licencing - Registration.

What is wrong with us Canadians. Not only allow we our Governments to tax us at every turn we also concede that the Queen of England is our head of State (and becomes part owner of our Boats if we like it or not.
