Arrow Storage costs on the hard: FL vs Caribbean

I am considering going down island and leaving my boat in storage on the hard in Grenada/Trinidad/ABC's.

I am truly surprised at the costs that the websites are quoting; they are 30% or more higher than what I am paying in St. Petersburg. I never expected to see higher rates for storage in the Caribbean, although higher prices for materials does not surprise me at all.

Am I the only one who finds this incongruous? Hauling the boat out is less expensive in the Caribbean, but everything else seems to cost more.

W Carib is generally less expensive if you make it over this way.

Actually, I don't find it that surprising. In the islands, the value of land is sky-high. Much higher than in Florida. So, you want your boat to sit there taking up some of that valuable land? You're gonna hafta pay!

.35-.40/ foot/day for long term storage. As compared to .25/foot/day I am paying in St. Petersburg. That is a huge difference. The spots I looked at were in Grenada and Trinidad-Tobago.

Re: Storage costs on the hard: FL vs Caribbean

If I remember right ( a big if!) a 38ft HC was about $300+ per month 13 years ago in Trini. ($400 now?) ....maybe it doesn't sound like too huge an escalation compared with everything else in the world 13 years later....
Anyone know if Grenada is cheaper?

I have the same question. Currently paying $.15/ft/day in Green Cove Springs. Rio Dulce is the only thing I've found that seems to be in the same ballpark.

Green Cove Springs is slightly more accessible than Rio Dulce ....

I've had to travel there for work a number of times, and can see why it is so cheap... I call it the "Rio Dulce Shuffle"

Fly into Guatemala City, negotiate terrible traffic in a very rough city in a unreliable rental car, drive 4-8 hours on a one lane pot hole ridden road, arrive in one of the most beautiful places in the world, and repeat the process for the return.

As much as I love Rio Dulce I don't think I would ever keep my own personal boat there... To remote, and too far downwind.

Yes, getting to the Rio is not very convenient, but they have made significant progress on CA9 construction. Back in Guate now and will be making that long trip soon.

Storage costs on the hard: FL vs Caribbean

We have stored our boat in the Carib for over 10 years and it is often expensive! Have left her in the Rio Dulce, Panama, Cartagena, Curaçao, Venezuela and now Puerto Rico for the past couple. Mostly all more expensive than Florida, for us it now is about convenience. We have a small dog on our crew and always consider the cost and ease for flying up to Boston in the overall cost structure. Sometimes you need to figure on hotels and ground transport into the price

Re: Storage costs on the hard: FL vs Caribbean

Hi all - we are based in Grenada and often work with both Spice Island Marine and Grenada Marine (the yard pictured in the post above). I happen to have the rate sheet for Grenada Marine here in my office - For long term storage (121 + days) they charge US$.38 per ft/day for a monohull and US$.52 per ft/day for a multihull.

I'm not sure how this compares to yards in Florida - but one distinct advantage is that these yards are in Grenada! Grenada is generally considered to be below the hurricane belt, already where you want to be cruising for the season, beautiful island, friendly people, safe, and a great cruising community!

A bargain at any price!!!
