I don't want to be parked anywhere near some boat insured with them.

My personal experience is they are dodgy.
Was Pantaenius your insurer or the insurer for the other boat?

It is my observation that the insurance world is changing. Going or gone are the days of insurance companies with customer care and integrity.

I sadly had a bad experience with well respected Amica. I was shocked when they played the minutiae and vague game.

Policies seem to be changing to the benefit of th insurance companies. I dropped Chubb because of this. And look at what happened when BoatUS switched to Geico.

Insurance coverage is becoming a commodity with little differentiation. These days the standard response is to avoid a payout. Get used to it.

The other boat. His ropes broke. He was told the day before that his ropes were old and should be replaced.

I am not "bearing with you" and if you feel that a single post from a complete stranger on an internet forum is going to make me change my insurer of the last decade, then you are very much mistaken.

Who says you can't post a synopsis of the events leading up to the need to make an insurance claim?

Failure to "maintain" is an absolute defense for the denial of a claim. I cannot insure myself against my own dereliction of duty. If one could do so, one could skip maintenance entirely, No?

More importantly, your own insurance should have covered some of your loss, if not all, No?

His intentional neglect of maintaining his boat caused the damage. Why would an insurance company pay out for intentional neglect? It would and should fall on the head of the owner of the neglected boat. Stupid is not covered. Sue the owner for damages.

Re: Stay away from Pantaenius Yacht Insurance Why? read below..

Hello,

Just for the record, here is my opinion - our boat is insured with Pantaenius (Germany) and they are great. We had a damage in Ibiza in 2010 and after a phone call, an agent flight from Mallorca, inspected the boat and gave green light to make the repair. Great service. Two years ago, they informed us on a newsletter that things like engine fail and need for towing was covered, something that I did not know. In a recent boat show we asked for a quotation to a different company and the price was similar. So, good price, too.

May be in the US they act differently but in Europe we can trust on them!

Regards, Vladis

I think this may be one of those threads where we don't hear from the OP again.

Re: Stay away from Pantaenius Yacht Insurance Why? read below..

It seems to me the insurance company acted correctly. If the dock lines were old/weak, then the owner acted careless. No insurance company insures for carelessness. If they would, our premiums would probably go through the roof. This means the other owner is liable for the damage to your boat and not his insurance company. You can try to get your damage paid by the other owner. Normally your own hull insurance should cover this, though... .

I had one claim with Pantaenius (Europe) many years ago, and they were great. They flew out a surveyor on a private plane into the middle of nowhere. Only comment I got was that sooner or later the average will catch up with you. Payment was prompt, and I also got help with a lot of stuff that they were not bound to do.

Re: Stay away from Pantaenius Yacht Insurance Why? read below..

Insurance companies are inthe business of making money; they are not in the business of paying claims.

Over the years, all insurance companies have migrated toward collecting every minute detail. The computerization of data has helped to make this change.

Your insurer also pays for the costs of defense (your defense). One never knows where a claim will end.

You pay your money and you make your choice. Before you purchase insurance ask around, check with brokers, ask to speak with an adjuster — whatever you have to do —it’s your policy and it’s all on you.

That’s the way it works, in my opinion.
