Shopping the Euro

So I have been doing some boat shopping on yachtworld and am noticing a weird trend. The boat I am looking at costs between $15 and 30000 in the states. When you then look at it in Europe it is worth between 25 and $50000. How can I estimate the true value of this boat?

There is no true value when you are looking at boats in different countires due to cost of freight and tax. EU VAT is very high where US tax very low. So a boat in the EU VAT paid would be worth more to a European than a US boat of the same price because it costs to ship to the EU and Tax would be added.

Same as the boats bought in the Carib and taken to Australia. the difference in value is the cruisers are just undercutting Dockwise, et al.

If you want to buy in Europe look for a boat marked "tax unpaid". It will cost a Euro buyer 20% more to buy that boat than it will cost you so they will factor the tax into their bidding. Some of those boats can be bargains.

Look in Croatia. Some in Turkey too.

You would need is access to brokers´ databases to see the transaction prices. What you see at yachtworld etc. is askings, not values.

OK so brokers not being close enuff to be called family , how could I get access to the selling prices in europe - is it enuff to just ask ?
That opens up a whole new arena - condition is VERY important and a BIG factor in the final offer...

A broker in the family always helps. Otherwise ask people who bought boats in specific locations and they will tell you the story.

From my observations, the difference between the asking and the transaction is somewhat geographical/cultural - in some countries people haggle, in others they do not. I, for one, got my boat for what the asking was. But I hear from US people that there is a lot of haggling there - so the asking will allow for the fact.

All this is on the 'price' - what we pay for the toys. The 'value' is a completely different thing!
