Re: Shippng a yacht
Actually, I offered $15,000 and they accepted. He told me they might be able to do it for a bit less than that.

incredible! That is super cheap. I had to have my mast moved from Florida to the Carolinas and I think it was a third of that price. Just for the Mast.

I asked just to make sure he knew what a Leopard 53 Powercat is and how big it is. He said 100% yes and said they had moved things even bigger.

This is a new hobby that I'm really looking forward to . I'm still working. As long as I'm working, I can budget to fix or update whatever I want to over maybe an 18 month timeframe. I plan to retire as soon as this boat is in excellent and fully functional condition. And I'll have enough in residual income that I don't think maintenance from a restored point will overwhelm me.

Hope it works out for you. A very close friend of mine purchased a 3-year old Horizon PC52 (Power Cat), a very similar boat. A 3-year old boat should be full-shook out. But after 7-years of ownership, he's grown weary of the constant outflows measured in $5k-$10k tranches. OP assumes installing engines for $80k is a rip-off. Might be, or it might be a really tough job (V-Drives) to get it all installed, connected, and integrated correctly - there are all sorts of integrated controls. $55k is around 20-25 days of mechanic plus helper.
Good luck - be careful for what you wish......

A picture of my friend's Horizon PC52 in Travelift slings. Beam is 23-feet (Leopard is 25-feet). Bridge clearance is around 27-feet in the water, 30+ out of water on bed of truck. It weighs 65k lbs (Leopard is 20k lighter). Note the scale comparedto yard worker to right of picture
How exactly will something this size be trucked at any price?

Re: Shippng a yacht
The labor rate in Key West is dramatically higher than in NC. $55k there (assuming that is based in reality) might be $30k in NC.

Out of curiosity, what are the labor rates? I had a refit done in Ensenada MX but also looked in California, and then St Pete FL where I live. I was surprised that the yard rates in California were not appreciably higher than St Pete. I also talked to some yards in more rural areas but didn't find much of a discount.

Hmmm...for some reason, I thought Florida restricted permitted loads to 16-feet wide (8.5 ft for unpermitted) and no higher than 14-feet loaded height. But it sounds like there are some special waivers. Given US1 is a 2-lane road (24-foot wide, plus shoulders) for most of the 150-miles from KW to Miami, I am surprised --- especially at $15k for all modes including permits, pilot cars, powerline lifters, insurance, etc.
Take tons of pictures - this sounds interesting!

Re: Shippng a yacht
You are actually making me feel better. Your friend paid a premium for somebody else's lemon. That means I'm in a better position building each component of the boat individually and testing to make sure they are done right.

I would ask what is your experience in fitting or re-fitting a boat ??

Re: Shippng a yacht
I'm no expert at any of this but I'm certainly capable of replacing broken components and testing to see if they are working properly. In the boatyard, I'll have plenty of help if needed.
My last boat was a Beneteau 381. I replaced nearly everything inside from bow to stern. Not the diesel, though. I always paid people for those chores.

I think you are correct on the allowed widths and heights.
On I95, one has the option to go OVER the overpass if one has a height issue. However, that might not be easy in South Florida since some of the intersections over I95 would not allow one to go up the off ramp, cross the road, and then down the on ramp. The truck would have to make a right turn and then make a 180 degree turn, which likely requires driving around a block, and would likely be impacted by power lines and traffic lights.
Supposedly, the overpasses on the US interstates have a minimum height to allow the road transport of the atomic cannons that existed in the 1950s.

Re: Shippng a yacht
Cut it down the middle and ship it as two narrower half boats and then reassemble since you are rebuilding it anyway.
