Re: Shippng a yacht

You might find this interesting. She was wrecked 2 years ago and has been on the hard all that time. They took everything out that they could and hosed the inside with fresh water.

So - the cabinet drawers were out in the sun and rain for 2 years. They still fit and still look nice. I would have never guessed that was possible.

been paid a really nice sum to take it off someone's hands so they were not responsible for disposal

Jokes aside, good luck with the project, will like to see how it comes along.

Re: Shippng a yacht

At this moment, it appears I'll have around $600k in my boat when she is operational and in the water again. That estimate includes new bedding, cosmetic panels, lithium batteries, new galley, new Nav (I only have to replace part of that), etc. If I'm wrong, it might balloon to maybe $700k.

I think that's pretty good for a boat worth $1.2 million.

No idea how to find one, but barge might be you best bet to move the boat. As McHugh speculates, will be a LOT of money. But sounds like getting out of KW will more than cover the cost.

Yep, I priced out some new 53' Leopard Power Cats, and they are way north of $1.5 mil.
A bit out of my price league by one or two bucks though, but go big or go home, right !!

By any standard, this is a boat that I could never afford to own - unless I found an opportunity like this.

Buying and fixing up a boat is one thing, but keeping it and maintaining one is like having a giant sucking sound on your wallet 24/7.

But....you're in the mix now, so just enjoy yourself.

Re: Shippng a yacht

I actually think this is the best way to get a boat as a new owner. By the time I'm finished with repairs, I will have gone through every system and every wire on the boat. That means I'll know this boat inside and out which will give me a big advantage if something goes haywire.

This is a new hobby that I'm really looking forward to . I'm still working. As long as I'm working, I can budget to fix or update whatever I want to over maybe an 18 month timeframe. I plan to retire as soon as this boat is in excellent and fully functional condition. And I'll have enough in residual income that I don't think maintenance from a restored point will overwhelm me.

Re: Shippng a yacht

Here's the thing...considering your budget of $6-700K, you could buy a pretty decent boat for that, hell, even half that amount, and be on your way today...

That was my original plan. Until I had the opportunity to get this amazing boat.

An alternative not yet mentioned is that you could sail it outside to the vicinity of the boatyard of your choice and meet up with a previously arranged tow to bring it the last mile or two into the yard.

Re: Shippng a yacht

basically, you have a barge right now. Why don’t you get a hold of some commercial towboats and see if they could tow it all the way up to the carolinas?

look for people that run barge tows. this is a commercial operation you need, not a yachty type of thing.

someone could probably drag that right up the ICW. Or they could go outside

having a similar size boat, there is no way you can transport it over land. It’s actually not possible because it takes up three highway lanes just like mine. that makes it impossible. Some people have moved them short distances tipped way up on the side, but then you start to run into height issues that you can’t solve on the highway. The only way to move a boat like this is on the water.

I even looked into a helicopter. That doesn’t work either. The reason being that the entire flight path has to be cleared below the flight. Every human being below the flight path has to be evacuated from the flight path.

so water is your only option.

but for the cost, I think MHV has it right. by the time you pay the transportation fee and spend all of that time moving it, it will still cost the same amount

Re: Shippng a yacht

I just contracted with a construction/moving company that plans to move my boat by truck to Miami, boat cargo to Morehead City, and then by truck to New Bern.
