San Diego Marine Surveyor and Mechanic

We put on offer on an older sailboat 40' in San Diego and the only surveyor that I've found that comes highly recommended is Kells Christian. However the listing broker bans him from his boats, which I've never heard of, but anyway, if anyone knows of an excellent surveyor and/or mechanic it would be appreciated.
Much thanks!

If the Broker bans the surveyor, pull the offer! You are asking for trouble. Let the owner know why your offer is being pulled... broker is trying to pull a fast one IMO. Phil

Re: San Diego Marine Surveyor and Mechanic

The broker says quite a few brokers ban this surveyor as is he is an insurance surveyor and therefore a conflict of interest. But I don't buy that for a second. The situation is such that I don't think the buyer is aware.

Kells Christian is a good surveyor. Maybe that's the reason for the ban?

I knew what you meant, ShayW... but I'll bet you are correct that the seller doesn't know either... now the buyer does too!... I think that Kells is pretty well known in the San Diego/Mission Bay area and has a rep as a tough but fair surveyor. No wonder brokers don't like him! cheers, Phil

He is NOT a good surveyor. That would be an INSULT. Speaking from experience. He was my surveyor.

He (and his whole team) ARE EXCELLENT, WORLD CLASS and HONEST. no BS accepted from ANYONE. that is why brokers hate him.

but.. you may as well not do a survey if the broker won't accept a RESPECTED surveyor.

KELLS and CO do work for the insurance companies, so... they are not some bum off the street.

I would understand the broker if my friend wanted to pretend to be a real surveyor. BUT discriminating against KELLS? who is this POS broker?

Re: San Diego Marine Surveyor and Mechanic

The listing broker is Dan Cornwell.
We are not represented by a broker as we don't believe in them.
I really know nothing about this broker good or bad, just trying to protect ourselves by using THE best surveyor we can find. I didn't know it was legal for a broker to have an opinion on a surveyor or to enforce that opinion.
Dan says many other brokers in the area ban Kells as well.
I have read elsewhere that Kells is top notch, but thought it wise to flush out the situation a little more before making a decision to go forward. From the seller's story, it sounds like Dan got lucky with the listing, didn't know the seller before he showed up. So, I don't think it's the seller's influence. Anyway, thanks for your thoughts as always.

Well I understand what you're saying and that it is not a perfect world that we live and buy boats in BUT the bottom line is that the listing broker has nothing to do with the surveyor. It's the buyers responsibility to protect himself from the seller and the seller's broker by hiring an independant consultant to inspect and advise him. If the listing broker tries to interfere, there is cause for alarm and I would high tail it out of there asap!

Re: San Diego Marine Surveyor and Mechanic

Hi, ShayW,

First look at this thread, and I see consensus concerning your surveyor. Keep him; he's gotta be okay.

Now, as to the broker saying that the surveyor is banned, I have to guess that if the surveyor sees the boat, he'll explain why you should not buy it. So the broker's trying to keep you as an interested potential customer, and knows he'll lose the sale if that surveyor [who is respectable, and reportedly honest] surveys the boat. The situation is one to hightail it from, but keep the surveyor. There is no reason I can think of why you should trust ANYthing this particular broker has told you. I question if the truth is in him at all. Anyhow, CAVEAT EMPTOR!

Just my two cents, but you're sure getting plenty of warnings.

Ann
