Property tax for boats in British Columbia canada
Hello and thanks in advance,
I did search the web but I could not find a clear answer so i am asking the experts here.
I am considering the purchase of a sailing vessel for recreational purposes and, in addition to the usual expenses (maintenance, etc) I need to figure out how much to fork out to the local government.
I see there are other fellow canadians in this group and I woudl ask them if they know "where" the heck to find this information.
Property tax for: - used sailing vessel
- purchase price $70,000 CAD
- around 40ft
- what else do you need to access the tax?
Thanks a bunch !

Re: Property tax for boats in British Columbia canada
Hmmmmm, not sure what you are specifically asking. Purchase price will have GST (5%). If you are a BC resident you will also pay PST (7–12%) on purchase. There is GST /PST on most everything else, like moorage, power etc.
But afaik there is no "property tax" on boats or other things of that ilk. At least I don't pay it on mine. Do we even have such a thing in Canada? Sorry I can't quote the applicable tax laws and give you 100% confirmation but, like I said, not as far as I know...

There is no property tax for things like boats. You pay PST and GST at purchase time (total of 12%)

Re: Property tax for boats in British Columbia canada
Not a BC resident, but I think Macblaze has it right. I’ve never heard of property tax being applied to boats. You will be charged sales tax (GST & PST), and if you buy outside of Canada and then import the boat you might be charged an import duty if the boat is a non-NAFTA boat (not made in Canada or the USA or Mexico).
While there is no property tax, if your boat is kept at a marina or yacht club, part of your fees will go to cover the property tax of the facility. So you will pay property tax, but only indirectly.

Re: Property tax for boats in British Columbia canada
I'm a BC resident. If you are keeping the boat in BC you will pay Provincial Sales Tax, and federal GST.
If you are taking the boat to another province, or country you will pay no taxes until you register it locally or cross a border that has customs.
There are no property taxes on boats.

Re: Property tax for boats in British Columbia canada
Yes to the above, if you a Canadian buying a Canadian Vessel its GST and PST
If you are importing into BC/Canada it duty based on build location of vessel.
NAFTA will cover, USA and Mexico built vessels
And soon ( I think within the month ) .....
CETA will/might cover vessels built in the EU ( now that's exiting )

Re: Property tax for boats in British Columbia canada
Sorry a bit off topic but I'm USA citizen with a boat built in USA considering keeping my boat in Canada(BC). I'd heard there is an "import fee" in order to do that, has anyone had experience with this?

There is a time limit for foreign owners storing their boats in Canada.
The same is true in other countries including USA.
The purpose of this regulation is to prevent "foreigners" from letting residents "borrow" a boat that the country/state sales tax has not been paid

Re: Property tax for boats in British Columbia canada
-GST Goods and Services Tax- Federal Govt of Canada 5%
On prescribed Goods and services ( Moorage fees, Repairs Part etc)
On a New Boat Purchase price
On selected registration fees
-PST Provincial Sales Tax 7% -Province of BC
On prescribed Goods AND Services ( Moorage,
some services, some items
- New Craft first owner 5% Fed, 7% PST
- Second hand boats new owner 7% PST
- Any craft 10 HP or more- requires BC Licence -- kind of like a car
Is an annual fee ( with PST!)
- BC Licence not required if the craft is registered in Canada.
Regisatered craft in Canada requires dimesnsions etc- and can be on the ships registery any where in Canada-- in BC, Vancouver, Victoria, Nananimo
Halifax ( even if in another province --- federal you know ( excuse the spelling )
- Registration fee is a one time fee - for got how much think it;s around $350 all sizes- and Fed payment
Now if living aboard one has to ck out the local area as many marinas do not allow live aboards- some charge differently for live aboards) This part is highly variable etc ( if living aboard of course you will be paying a 7+5 % or 12% tax on your water, moorgae etc fees
