Planning About 8 Years Down the Road

Melissa and I took a look at two Lagoon catamarans this weekend, a 38' and a 42'. I liked the 38, the 42 seemed a little too big for some reason, not to mention the fact that the 42 was nearly double the price.

I have about 8 years left before I partially retire and I'd like to prepare a little between now and then. Are there financial advisers out there who specialize in buying, living on and cruising a sailboat?

Re: Planning About 8 Years Down the Road

Hi,
Saw your post and we're on about the same timeline in terms of sailing away. We will also be in the market for a catamaran, but plan on around 45'. My wife has a personal finance adviser she's used over the years, but he does not specialize in liveaboard/ cruising lifestyle planning. We've created a spreadsheet where we've priced out different boats, giving us an awareness of what we can/ cannot afford, monthly expenses, etc. From that, we've identified sources of income (my retirement, house rental, etc) and what we can do now over the next several years to maximize money in the bank (rent out our basement, max investments, etc.). Hope that helps!
