Personal Liability Umbrella for boat?

I am a full time cruiser in the Caribbean and am interested in obtaining liability insurance for my boat. The "Yacht Insurance" business doesn't seem to be geared for selling liability only, outside of the continental US.
Has anyone used a personal liability umbrella policy for their boat?
What has been the reaction at marinas?

Re: Personal Liability Umbrella for boat?

My personal liability umbrella policy requires that I have $300,000 in primary coverage under a marine policy. After that the umbrella picks up. So that doesn't sound like an option for you.

But there are liability only marine policies. Talk to a marine insurance broker. Al Golden of IMIS in Grasonville, Md is one. Jack Martin of Jack Martin Associates in Annapolis, Md is another. Either should be able to get you a marine liability only policy with coverage anywhere in the world.

Re: Personal Liability Umbrella for boat?

I wanted to post a follow up for anyone with the same problem.

I was able to find a very reasonable policy from N. C. Wathey Ins. Services, Philipsberg, St Maarten (they're on the web).

It is for the Caribbean and does not cover the US.

Fairwinds,
Ed
