Day One of the Dream. We found our boat in Florida and will close soon. We live in Maine and need to figure out what to do with the boat until she can get to Maine. We don't really have time to sail her all the way north until the summer although we can get started in March (why would anybody want to go north in March??) So the questions are:

Do we keep her in Florida for the winter and suck up the expense of a marina and somebody to watch her?

Do we sail her half way up in March and leave her in Annapolis until we can finish the sail to Maine in June?

Do we put her on the hard, north of the insurance hurricane limit until we can get to her in June?

Are there affordable options other than staying in a slip in a marina? (behind someone's home who can watch her, for example)

Any help would be incredibly appreciated.

I'm in a similar situation. I have gotten quotes to ship my boat from Uship.com.

I thought the rates were quite reasonable.

If you are paying for the insurance, i would definitely keep it in a location where insurance applies, IE north of the hurricane limit. Also, what is the length, as putting it in someones yard could work easier for a 24 footer than a 42.

She's in northern FL. I think we've worked out a plan. We'll keep her down there for a few months. We have some people who will take care of her when we can't be there. Then we'll get her north, to Maine, way before hurricane season. The shipping quotes have been outrageous. It would be cheaper for us to take time off from work and sail her up ourselves. And substantially more fun.

How long and what's her beam? Draft? I know a good shipper who goes anywhere. Based in So. texas they'll pick up one in Maine and take it to Vancouver BC if you like. VERY reasonable rates. Actual trucking was $3k from Tampa to Corpus Christi, Tx.
