Just found this thread and I'm here to help if I can. The marine insurance industry is pretty messy with only a handful of carriers willing to provide coverages. Quotes take time and patience when dealing with underwriters who hold all of the cards. I'm really enjoying learning all I can in this industry which is why I do what I do. Everyone has their own unique situation and needs to be documented as such when doing a submission.

So the likes if State Farm and Geico/Boat US are out unless they have changed coverage areas in the last few years.

In 2019 I applied to Panatreaus, but they had a hull value limit of something like greater than $300,000.

I am reaching out to Anjo/Massey in Antigua. They quoted me a few years ago.

Help...I’m in same ‘boat’ as many others right now trying to get insurance!

I recently purchased a sailboat in San Francisco Bay area this June. I live out of the state so some of the initial companies I contacted like Progressive won’t write it up for me. I recently started shopping more locally after trying other options, with one Im waiting on yet as of yesterday.

All companies had their own reasons thus far for not being able to insure, including areas they operate, age of vessel, etc.

Thus far:

Progressive
State Farm
Hagerty
SkiSafe
MUA
Edward Williams (they want to insure more in US but awaiting more finalizing on paperworks before taking new customers)

The past owner paid up the slip under his contract and it ends August first. Boat is in the original slip yet from past owner. Was going to just keep it there for time being although this marina is very particular on staying there. Its city run and manager not the friendly type I gather. So Im under his graces now with that said.

I just got back into the lifestyle recently after life took me here and there for a number of years. Wow, things seem to be somewhat sucky right now with ebb and flow going in not so good ebb direction. I don’t want to loose my boat over this. Seems I need to reach out into boating community, catch up and see as a community where the solutions lay.

Any help or suggestions or discussions welcome...and thank you!

Try State farm. They insure about anything. Not the best policy. Not sure if they do liability only.

State Farm not doing any boats over 30 years now they told me. Tis one I had already contacted on my list posted above.

Now Im wondering how many of my requests are simply overlapping each other out their in the field. Whom works with whom as agencies and brokers? This is extremely disheartening.

There are a lot of carriers out there and 20x more agents accessing those carriers. Agents like going for the easy quotes of newer boats...I submit everyone I can and put in the extra time trying to help the client. I know if I was in your shoes (will be in a couple years) I would want someone to put in the effort and be straight up with me. Some boats just can't be insured for various reasons...mainly age. If the boat is more than a few years old, a NAMS or SAMS certified surveyor is a must. There are a lot of surveyors out there who are really good but if that certification is wanted across the board. There are exceptions but for the sake of time and consideration, those certs are a must to access the vast majority of carriers.

I called three San Francisco Bay area ‘agents’ of which two popped up at top of search results, and the third was a broker the marina manager recommended.
Two no pick up and only can leave a voice mail. Not a peep from them. The marina recommended one, the receptionist took down my basic info to pass on and I should hear back from them that day. Nothing yet. These rounding out end of this week.

I guess Im old fashion and was raised as such business wise. We always at minimum contacted customers back if we couldn’t help. Heck, these recent ‘agents’ don’t even know what my situation and vessel is. Haha. Im not sure how serious a business they really are.

The customer rep from Edward Williams kept her word and did have the insurer they worked with in Florida contact me in which I did receive email from them yesterday and an application attached. So that was nice. Where that leads Im not sure.

As a community, Im wondering if other options can be explored moving forward, such as forming a co op of sorts. I have no background in the insurance industry, but would be interested to hear thoughts on something of this nature.
