Don,

One comment on your boat vs house expenses. If you don't consider the costs for upgrades to the boat then your annual boat costs will be quite similar to your house costs. Since upgrades are not usually an ongoing annual expense and can happen to homes and boats (believe me I know, just ask what we've spent in the last ten years on upgrading our old house), then should that not be in a separate category?

I think once I'm done with the refit my costs for annual repairs, upgrades and such will be minimal for a while.

For comparision, before I hauled my annual expenses.

Insurance $1400
fuel, normal $100
fuel, ICW CT to FL $500
mooring rent RI $1500

Dock rent, N FL $350-$400/month
haul for bottom paint, etc FL - $400, CT $800
overnight transient docking, New England - $120 and up. South of NY, $50-$80,

As you can see, much cheaper in FL that New England, plus you get to sail year round.

Yes! My numbers even include stopping at the hardware store to get bolts/nuts etc for doing things. If I got boat soap to clean the deck it went in the spreadsheet.

I would bet that there is less than $30 than was spent on the boat that wasn't recorded. But if you notice maintenance was small compared to just keeping the boat in the water and stored.


PS - you manage to stop at WM and only do "small stuff"? Maybe I need some tips? But I were I probably would record as "small stuff" in my spreadsheet.

Not often but it has happened. If I'm in a hurry, have some boat item in parts all over the galley/cockpit/counter and I need a hoseclamp/bolt/tool to put it back together right now I have been known to run in, buy the hoseclamp/bolt/tool and leave while averting my eyes from the new GPS/radio/chart plotter/radar/pump/chart kit for the south seas, thus saving my boat buck until the next time.

I do my own maintenance

Mooring: $2700 pa, inc water & electric.
Insurance: $105 pa
Fuel: $10 per year (we don't use engine much!)
Everything else, don't know... ignorance is bliss for marital harmony!!!

On the bottom cleaning, I have taken a brush to the sides now and then. But when the diver changed the zinc, he said the hull did not look that bad. I do sail alot and have ablative paint

So mine looks like this ...

3300 for my slip at Reed Point Marina
650 for HUB Insurance ($40K value)
220 for Fuel
510 Haul-out Cleaning and Bottom Paint (had paint)
120 Maintenance

Total: $4800 for the year.

Logged 39 trips and 92 days on the boat exploring the beautiful Pacific North West which adds up to $52.17 per day sailing! Good Deal!

What I really like about this is that to head off for a weekend costs next to nothing with fuel at $1.35/hour (when the wind is not blowing). I see the big power boats going by eating 6 to 12 gallons per hour at $6/gal and I am glad I chose to catch the wind.

$12675 so far this year with a month and a half left.
$17680 last year starting in September when I bought this boat.
$10000 in the budget for 2012, as I have the boat setup the way I want and I am hoping not many things break

A tad hard to believe, based on my experience. Where does your boat live? If memory serves, it used to live on the Estuary. Pacific & Alameda marinas respectively, I think.

Not looking for the business. Just trying to get people to have realistic hull maintenance expectations. Cleaning frequencies are typically 2-3 months in the main part of San Francisco Bay. So when someone says they have gone all year without a cleaning yet their bottom is "not that bad", I have to wonder.
