I've looked into trucking and the estimate is around $10,000. Anybody have any ideas the cost of hiring a captain to bring it through the canal and up the West Coast? How long would that take?

tickets(transportation) to and from place of residency , plus 1 dollar per mile or a daily charge, plus per diem plus fuel plus canal fees plus.....food and beverages/provisioons..... could be equal to what you are paying for trucking or a tad more.

faster and safer to truck it,,,,,will take about a month if not more with lots of wear and tear on the boat,,plus who knows what will happen out there

It might have to be sailed to Hawaii. A trip up the West Coast is against both wind and current. Hawaii to the PNW is 3 weeks alone.

If you were going the other way it would be worth it. Going north in the Pacific from Panama would be like dragging anchors up hill. Truck it. The wear and tear on the vessel and engine is going to cost you more in the long run than shipping by truck.

I had a Catalina 30 brought up from San Diego 15 years ago for $3,000. Apparently trucking from FL is closer to $14,000 than the $10,000 I mentioned.

Hi,

Recently moved a 37ft Tayana from Savannah to Bellingham, paid less than $K10. I used Carthage Marine Transport, the guy I spoke to was Travis and he was extremely helpful, I had to wait a few weeks until there was a truck in a suitable location for the pick up. I was unable to attend either the pick-up or drop-off, it was all taken care of by Travis. I would highly recommend them on both price and service.

A 42' might be a wide load, thus escort vehicle and route restrictions would result it be much more expensive, than a 37' for example. One other option is to transport via ship, no idea on cost.

wide load can only travel during the day,,will take some time,,,,,by ship???good luck on finding one that will do it,,,,get some quotes from tucking companies,,,it will cost more by sailing it,,,at 1.50 per mile 4800 miles is about 7200 dollars for captain,,he will need other crew,,,,,,,,plus other fees,,,,PLUS wear and tear on the boat,,also about 6-8 weeks of sailing every day maybe more,,,,plus canal cost plus marinas here and there,,,get the picture,,,,,trucking is the way to go take about 1 week just put mast up and down,,good time to look at all the rigging and mast,,it takes about 3 weeks to cross the atlantic from florida to rock of Gibraltar with good weather,,,you are going against the weather and the current part of the way,,,how much beating is the boat going to take,,,,how much for a new set of sails if they blow out,,,,,TRUCK IT

Yep. Sounds like you want to truck it. That's too far to make a fun beat up the west coast. Couple hundred miles northbound can be fun, but not from Panama. And tough on your gear for sure.

We just bought our boat in Michigan. Will sail it some this year up north, then back to Chesapeake Bay next summer through the Lakes and Canals, etc. I figure the cost to sail it will be about the same as trucking would be, given time off from work and the wear and tear ... But part of the incentive for our purchase, besides fresh water aspects, was taking that trip to get her home.

If we didn't want to do the trip ourselves, I'd definitely have it trucked instead of a hired captain. Good luck!
