In that case marinas in Europe have been an exclusive club for a couple of decades at least..
They all require a minimum of Liablity coverage.

Re: Liability only insurance no survey required

USAA/Progressive won’t cover my 1979 Union Polaris 36’ for live aboard in California for basic marina liability. I’ll try my old insurance company IMIS/Markel or Jackline (which I forgot about... thanks for the reminder).

Re: Liability only insurance no survey required

My insurers just charged me NZ$2350 for the exact same cover that I bought from them last year for NZ$1385. But we have to have it else we can’t go into marinas to fuel up or the haul out facility. Both ask for $2m public liability cover.

But 70% inflation in an economy that claims 3.5% sounds to me like piracy. Can do nothing about it - as an existing customer I need no survey for local sailing but would if I switched insurers and that would cost a lot more. Of course they know that.

Re: Liability only insurance no survey required

I called 2 days ago the Geico agent said anything over 26' needs a survey . Anything over 30' and 20 years will be really looked at . I called another company end result the agent said nothing over 20 years. And book value should be 20 k. Is no problem. I don't have a boat yet. We will see

Re: Liability only insurance no survey required

You can try Gowire, used to be IMIS and handled Jackline.

They are brokers and can check several insurers.

One thing I found is that the person that handles you means a lot. Get someone good on the phone and your golden. Get the next desk over and you are sunk.

I have found with some I have to ask a lot of questions.

Me I want to do hurricane season on the hard in Grenada.
Her That is outside the box, I can’t write a policy there.
Me How do other people do it?
Her I don’t know, I can’t write a policy for Grenada
Me Can I get a rider for Grenada?
Her Sure, but it costs extra.
Me (WTF!) How much extra?
Her $150.

AAARRRGH!!!!

One of several examples.

Thankfully she no longer works there. Others had similar incidents.

Yes, you have it right. But his question was about a survey.

Has anyone had the same experience as me with Boat US?
I'm interested to get a liability only policy without survey sailing primarily on the Long Island Sound.

Please advise any helpful information
Larry,
Underwriting rules have gotten tighter over the years at GMIC since 2016. GMIC requires a survey on boats that are older than 20 years of age. I do know that Markel Helmsman will often allow us to write liability only policies with no survey required if you have owned the boat for 3 years or more with no claims and you are not an absentee owner. If you'd like me to give it a try, send me an e-mail or PM.

Re: Liability only insurance no survey required

I believe you will find it extremely difficult to get even "marine" Liability in today's market without a survey. Geico bought BoatUS and Seaworthy., I think they got tired of paying claims on boats that were on the books that were insured and nobody actually knew the condition or real value of the vessel. It's a mathematical formula, more payouts on vessels that had no survey as opposed to vessels that were surveyed. You MAY find a homeowners policy that will sell it to you, but read the policy closely, be absolutely sure you know what is not covered.

Re: Liability only insurance no survey required

It seems somewhat logical to me that if your boat is not seaworthy there may be additional risk of a liability claim against your boat. If your boat catches fire at the dock and torches the boats on ether side and an investigatioin shows an improper or faulty electrical wiring issue. You might be held liable for operating a boat with inadequate inspection.

Geico needs to pay for its acquisition of Boat US.

Re: Liability only insurance no survey required

I don’t get the survey for just liability?
Maybe some confusion with the phone people?

Mine if about the same size or boat, 1M liability due to where it’s kept, and I also have full coverage, never was asked for my survey, though I got one when I bought the boat.

Try State Farm, though you have to add on boat US on your own.

That said, a survey wouldnt be a bad idea even if you don’t bother with insurance, some fresh eyes on the boat is a good thing.

Good luck
uh...The boat next to us that sank at the dock was covered by Markel- The owner was very unhappy when Markel refused to pay out for salvage and cleanup. The owner thought they were covered - It was interesting as just the year previously we had a conversation about insurance with the owner and they were surprised at how low their payments were as compared to ours...just sayin'

Thanks I'll keep that in mind for next year. I did get liability only without a survey from Allstate. 500k liability coverage, up to $3000 a year emergency / towing. Total policy was$180. The towing is not a direct pay like with Geico/BoatUS so will have to see how that works out. Using an agent was much easier.
