Insurance Confusion

Sooo …. I pulled the trigger retired and I want to move my boat south. I have been sailing the Great Lakes for 20+ years and fully understand the insurance it’s coverage and its limits. I am now shopping for Insurance for a trip south. I plan on taking 6 to 7 months to mosey my way down to the southwest Gulf Coast of Florida where I plan to keep the boat for a while. (Yes, if I mosey my way along part of the trip will be during hurricane season.)

All that said what has people’s experience been with various Insurance companies and policies? what coverage restrictions are common? which are worth paying extra to get an override (if even available)? which are not? Which provide a good claims experience? Which do not? Who seems to be fair priced for the coverage? Which are cheap with crappy coverage? Which are expensive for what you get? What should a naive Great Sailor be careful to look out for? ETC. ETC. ETC You get the picture.

So let the advice begin.

Re: Insurance Confusion

I have boat insurance through State Farm. Their rates seem reasonable, and they provide coverage for U.S., Canada, Bahamas, and within some distance -- I think 200 miles -- of the coastline.

I'll be interested to see what replies you get.

Re: Insurance Confusion

You might call IMIS and ask them. They are well respected for pointing out coverage options and omissions that others would just gloss over. You'll find that if you are operating solo, that's also going to be a consideration and possibly make you uninsurable unless you remain with xx miles of the coast at all times.
