Import tax question

I'm looking at a boat in French Polynesia. Import taxes haven't been paid, and are due on it May 2025. Due to my limited sailing experience, if I get the boat I was planning to spend 1-2 years in FP exploring and building experience before I do any longer cruises. Also b/c I'd like to stay and explore FP some.

Any suggestions for how to avoid the 7% import tax? Is there a "semi" close area I could sail to? Can I register the boat elsewhere? etc....

I considered hiring someone with experience to help me sail it elsewhere, but I really would like to spend at least a year in FP exploring and sailing. I'd hate to leave such an amazing area so quickly. Long term I'll definitely go to NZ, Australia, etc.. but not anytime soon.

Any suggestions?
