How to Avoid Buying a Stolen Boat

Good Morning;
I am seeking to buy a used steel hulled Sailing Yacht. Since they are not as plentifull as some others I am also considering several Boats presently located in varius Central American Countries. I plan to buy the Boat do some Cruising and after satisfying my lust sailing it arround the bottom parts of South America, bring it back to my Home in Victoria-Canada.

The number one question is,

How can I be sure not to purchase a Stolen Boat.

* Boat is Flying a European Flag.
* Boat is presently tied up, or on the hard on a Dutch Island in the Caribean.
* Brocker is living on a Boat in the Caribean, but has a European adress.
* Seller claims to live in yet another Country.

Thank you all in advance for any knowledge based advice.

Get the boat's hull number and country of registration, the rest can be done on the internet or via a single telephone call. Stolen is not the only problem, but liens as well.

If the guy has an eye patch, wooden leg and parrot, don't buy it!
Maybe some folks in the area where the boat is will know some of the history.

The particular Yacht I am referring to is supposed to be registered in Germany.

Contact the German registry of shipping and they will tell you who the owner is (for a fee no doubt). At least that is how it happens in Australia .
