Re: Guess the cost - delivery half way round the world

In America u can avoid paying taxes if u keep the boat out of America after purchase for the year. So for example... if I buy a boat in San Diego that I like but ask the owner to take delivery of it in Ensenada Mexico I have achieved my goal. Keep it harboured there for a year. I have avoided the 8-9 % sales tax.

I don't know New Zealand tax laws but I wonder if it wouldn't be similar.

As a gauge, a fried last year had a transport ship deliver his boat from Australia to Ft. Lauderdale, a 44 foot catamaran, and it cost a bit over US$80K, I believe.

DYT yacht transport will charge you about 35 to 40K US$ I would guess given recent quotes.

We also looked at this option a year ago; wife visited UK and found maybe twenty boats within budget and meeting requirements, all based in two small marinas near her location. In the whole of NZ it was hard to find one boat that met our specifications. Finally we found a visiting European yacht for sale here at a 'European' price, so delivery was free!

The 20% import charges are a serious drawback though.

First small dollar option to go look at boats in NZ that you fancy ... ignore asking price and put your bid in . Many examples of boats here in NZ going for way less than asking . Lots of owners not wanting to do the sail back to the States or Europe facing the same delivery issues as you the other way round! Big room for serious negotiation for a serious buyer with dollars in the bank .... cheers John

Is that just the Pro skipper or skipper plus 2 crew?

I’ve had a passing fantasy of doing the Chilean channels. Got a boat for it. My Admiral isn’t up for the “delivery” to Chilean waters or the trip back up the East coast of SA. It would be a couple of years from now. I would need 2 crew, one well seasoned. A rule of thumb as quoted gives me something to think about.

It’s roughly 10,000 miles all told.

Hi there. You have confused me. Do you want to buy a boat in NZ and get it to where ? If so, I may be able to put you onto something that would get you a very nice boat at a favourable cost to you.
Get back to me with more specific detail.

No, the OP is in NZ and is thinking that rather than buy a boat already in NZ, he might get a substantially better deal by buying outside NZ and getting the boat delivered (either on it's own bottom or ship) to NZ from wherever it purchased.

Coincidentally came across this elsewhere

“Rates start at $150 per day. Email me at captainryanlangley@gmail.com with your vessel's make, departure date, port of departure, destination and targeted arrival date for a free quote. “

It was 15k from Baltimore to St. Thomas USVI for my 53' motor cruiser. 60,000 lbs if that helps a bit.

Re: Guess the cost - delivery half way round the world

We started in Asia, shipped from Phuket to Marmaris, Turkey, sailed the Medd for 3+yrs and then shipped from Genoa to St Thomas. The shipping charge for our 43' monohull was $26k for the first leg, and $22k for the last....just to give you an idea. Call the shipping companies-lots of them there- and get a current quote-then you're working with real numbers!

Re: Guess the cost - delivery half way round the world

Hello. I worked up a couple of bids for you for delivery of a vessel from the Med to Auckland New Zealand. Please feel free to contact me at
Rorykremer1@gmail.com if interested.
My most recent delivery was that of a 95ft steel hull from Vancouver, British Columbia to Pago Pago, Samoa.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
