Funding Cruising... The This and Thats
I am planning to head out in 2013 for undefined amount of cruising to undefined ports (well I have plans, but nothing as set as day 1 port 1 etc), going to be a see how long I want to stay on the water for etc.
A question I have always wondered, for people who do 5 year, ten year or more circumnavigation, how are you all funding these endeavors?
What are you costs involved roughly per year, month etc, and are you taking on people to share costs along the way..home based business etc..to fund this...
Any information would be appreciated...cheers

Re: Funding Crusing..the this and thats..
Welcome aboard CF
The first 2 times I've cruised you were able to work in a lot of places, but not so much anymore.
This time I've got good retirement income.

Cheers,
I just found a few of the income threads and find it pretty interesting...
Also thanks for the other two..i will read shortly..
A retirement income would be fantastic..but as I am just shy of 36, and not quite bill gates..it's a ways off lol...

If you take people with you to share expenses make sure they are always referred to as crew, NEVER EVER as a passenger, unless you have a 6 pack captains license.
As you will see in the other threads, it's as much as you can afford. Couples have ranged from $500 to $4500 per month..

Greetings and welcome aboard the CF, asteffensen.
I think you’ll find as many differing answers to your query, as cruisers offering them. How do you expect to fund your cruising?

i wouldnt rely on fish in a lot of places due to cigatuera poisening, you may have to exist on rice and beans.
however managed 2 circumnavigations taking paying crew@$20/day and working as a shipright and the occasional delivery.

Welcome aboard. So many variables determine the cost of living / cruising. Most of that depends on what you like to do, what you want to eat, and how self sufficient you are.

Lol I do like fish
My main thought is rice beans nuts an hopefully fresh fruit and veggies from along the way. And dried of the same as well
As for funding I am trying to sort that out lol. The forum has provided some good ideas and will explore those.
One thought I have had is to try and find someone to do a 6 on 6 off partnership with in a small restaurant or pub. That was we both get some good travel time.

Re: Funding Cruising... The This and Thats
My wife and I started saving up right before we graduated from college. Saving for us is a lifestyle. We recognize that the more we can save up now, the longer we can be out later. There really is no secret. Eating out less, being thrifty, drinking water only instead of buying all sorts of other beverages that cost money. It can be done!
