Cash on Board US to Brazil

Hello!

I'll be leaving soon to head from US east coast to Brazil, Natal or Recife.

My plan is to get just a few hundred USD in BRL before I leave, since the exchange rates will be better Shen there anyway.

Is this a terrible idea? Anyone who's gone through Brazilian customs/immigration: will this be enough to get legal?

Thanks!
-Jordan

I have cleared into Brazil several times and I was never asked to pay any money at the Policia Federal (immigration), Receita Federal (Customs) or Capitania dos Portos (harbormaster).

That said, if you are planning to rely on ATM machines in Brazil make sure you carry cards from more than one bank, because in Brazil there are many ATM machines that do not work with all foreign cards.

Another story is that I wonder how are you planning to go from US East Coast to Natal or Recife. I have sailed twice from Recife to the Caribbean and I can assure you I would not want to follow the opposite route.

Thanks svlamorocha that's exactly the info I was looking for!

The plan is to head straight east from US north of 30, then straight south at 35W.

Can you recommend a specific entry port in the area?

I am looking at Cabedelo... It seems be popular for commercial vessels.

Are you concerned about having too much US cash, or not enough?

Two credit or debit cards linked to different accounts.
Never carry the two at the same time.
$500 US to tide you over for when you are carrying the two at the same time and get robbed.

Don't ask me how I know this sort of stuff.......

I have traveled in Brazil and enjoyed it immensely. But be careful advertising much cash on board! Recife is a great town. I fell madly in love there for three whole days!!!

Then you may consider stops at Azores and Cape Verdes, just to break a very long trip. Your Portuguese will be gopd by the time you arrive on Brazil!

Regarding entry into Brazil, the received wisdom is that you pick it based on where you want to go and time of the year. Based on that data the pilot charts for wind and current will tell you if you are better of making a straight run to your final destination or clear in further North and hug the coast from there.

After a long trip I would aim at a big city where I can get parts and stuff. Recife or Salvador are my best bets.
