Buying from Owner

I am hoping for some tales/advice concerning purchasing an expensive boat (for Me) directly off of craigslist. What precautions should one take, i.e. how do I know that the boat has no liens or has not been salvaged or has unpaid taxes on the boat? What would be an easy way to do the research? Please any and all information will be appreciated.

I have a friend who has a lot of luck with boats on Craigs List. He buys, rehabs, and sells. Just do your due diligence, do not buy sight unseen, and get a survey.
