For the most part the federal Customs duty is 1.5%. Depends on where the boat was built and a few other things, but that’s the standard rate. Bringing it into Florida you will likely end up having to pay state sales/use tax, but I’d have to review state laws.

A bigger deal, the engines have to be EPA compliant and you have to file paperwork to that effect. This can be a big deal, you simply can’t import the boat if the engines are not compliant.

EPA compliant?

Interesting. Is there some age restriction on that? Like built before 1970 or something? Just curious as I see the occasional really old motor.

Yes, there is an age limit, depends on engine size, from 1999 to 2007 or thereabouts. EPA Form 3520-21 has all the details.

Because of recalls (the Volvo D2 series is the best example) do not rely on engine stickers. Check the official EPA database of certified engines.

All of that is compression ignition (diesel) engines, there are other rules for spark ignition engines.

If I’m not total goo-foo. Keeping the boat out of country for a year will squelch the import tax. At least it did for me in California. I bought a boat in Sea of Cortez.

I've read last year on a Dutch forum that sellers has to pay between 22 and 30% ‘tax en duties’. Of course there are solutions to avoid this. So it is possible you have to sign the contract outside territorial waters and the knew owner signs in or something similar. I don't know the detail. It isn't a bad idea to check.

Too little information to comment like:

Where built
When built
Year and model of engine
Current flag, documentation or registration if any
Not already imported into the US
