Two suggestions given that you appear fairly new to the game.

Marine Survey 101, pre-survey inspection

How much is she worth, boat values, a crap shoot

If I understand you're budget is $25,000.00 (C meaning Canadian?) not $250,000.00? And for that you want a good quality, "blue water" boat, 45-50' needing very little work?

If correct then I would say your chances are in range of slim to none, maybe less.

Yes. My apologies. Confused your post with the post from the original poster. Both handles had lots of consonants with a surplus of Zs and Ks.

Looks like a very good deal on your Irwin. Didn't see any details on the engine in the ad. Is it original or repowered? Hours?

Have two friends shopping for boats in that size/price range.

Joe , looks like a bargain and a very well maintained rig.
I bet you are sad to let her go and I hope you can find her a good home to go to.

Reflections is a very nice yacht for the price. Wish I was in Canada, but unfortunately I'm in Australia.
Frozen shoulders... I had my right shoulder operated on 10 years ago at age 62 and my left shoulder "popped" and released with a cortisone injection at age 65.
Both are fine now.

Re: Buy and sell in 2 years

Others beat me to it but yeah, refits return little if anything to the resale value.

Also, figure 10% lost to the broker.

Plus you likely will have around $1000/month carrying costs while you wait for it to sell. You can reduce that by dropping the price but financially it's likely a wash.

So on a $250k budget, if you do a refit of say $50k, I would expect to lose somewhere on the order of $60-80k when the final tallys come in (not including expenses during the 14 month trip).

Of course, this assumes you buy well. As a newbie, there is a very good chance you buy a lemon and then it could eat up far more of your $250k...hence the suggestion to start smaller and simpler. If you only have $50k invested, that puts a much smaller cap on what you can lose.

Also, as brought up, while it can be done, going from no experience to transoceanic voyaging...more often than not doesn't turn out well. People will show you the great stories about it working but those are the exception. Most wind up giving up when they find out the realities.

PS: sorry if this comes across as debby downer but better you understand the potential pitfalls than have people tell you it will be fine and then you find out the hard way.

Re: Buy and sell in 2 years

I kinda wanted to reply to the topic starter, but it seems like the topic was succesfully hijacked and has become a completely unrelated "boat for sale" topic?
