best iridium deal

Hi All!

Simple question for the one who knows the answer.

I am looking for the cheapest 1,2 or 3 year iridium 9555 plan.

Thanks a lot. Mark.

Re: best iridium deal

i hate to be flippant here but the best 9555 long term plan is to sell the 9555 on ebay and then buy either a RedPort Glow or an Iridium GO and then purchase either the unlimited data plan for $124 per month or a 3000 or 5000 minute prepaid card. on the Glow/GO the minutes count double. so a 5000 minute card is worth 10000.

if you do the cost analysis you will find that the difference in airtime will more than make up the difference in changing platform.

take care.

Be careful some prepaid plans have a life of 12 months, looked good on paper but I only used 600 minutes of a 2500 minute prepaid card........now I am wiser

Hi, Thanks for the reply's Can you make phone calls with iridium GO? some years ago this was impossible.
If not, I like to stay with the 9555

Still hope for a proper answer.

I believe plans have standard pricing, so it will be the same from vendor to vendor. You can make a phone call from a Go but you do it via a smart phone connected to the Go by local wifi connection. Need to keep 2 devices charged.

Re: best iridium deal

If you use an RedPort Glow
Glow Iridium WiFi Terminal - RedPort Global
then you can use a handset to make calls or you can use an App on your mobile device.

The airtime for the Glow and the GO are the same rate.

3000 and 5000 minute cards (double that for the Glow and the GO) are valid for 2 years..

however... the unlimited data and sms + 150 voice for $124 is a pretty good deal.

It looks like the contract term is only for a month. Do you know if they charge a fee for dormant accounts, or can you just activate when needed? Is each change to the account charged the $50 activation fee?

The Unlimited plan is month to month.. There is a $50 activation fee to activate the plan and then it will run until you say stop...

Once an iridium card deactivated it can be reactivated without changing the SIM card within 3 months of deactivation. There is a $50 activation fee. If you go longer than 3 months then you need to replace the SIM card. Many cruisers buy a pile of blank SIM cards ($10 ea) and have them in stock. Then activate the plan only for long passages. Other just activate the plan and let it run for the duration of their cruise.

If your usage is going to be light then a prepaid card might be better. A 1000 minute prepaid card for Glow/GO cost $720 and is valid for a year. The minutes can be used anyway you want during that period. And... if you add minutes before the card expires you wont any minutes that might be let at the end of the period.

take care.

Re: best iridium deal

Hi,

Thanks for the responses! I am more looking for a +/- 300min per year or 700 min for 2 or 3 years. I had the last year 300 minutes and got 150 left on the end of the year. So i make a lot of calls and emails now to finish the credit before i loose them all at 29 September. I like to go with another company now from outside the EU to save myself 25% vat. So my question is not answered in a satisfying way yet!

Thanks, mark

Re: best iridium deal

unfortunately there are no 300 minute plans with one year validity. you can do 200 for 6 months or 500 for a year or 2x500(1000 min) for 2 years.

here is a list of the standard iridium plans
Iridium Prepaid Airtime

Take care.

Hi,
Yes it was not a standard plan or something but more like a special offer. And is was 300 min and I will loose the left over on 29 september, even when i extend the contract.

See here:
Special Plans (Available by phone only - 01473 327813)
Low Cost Global
300 Minute / 12 months plan
When these minutes are used or the plan has expired the SIM can be converted to any standard plan above but any residual minutes will be lost.
£420.00
