Hi everyone,

Thank you for taking the time to provide input.
I’ve learnt quite a bit through this thread and I think I now have the answer to my question.

Have an amazing day!

Love to know if it was "Paul" that issued the fine? Which Marina? On the Murray River?
It is the berth owners DUTY to ensure the berth occupier has the insurance.
Management should have NO contact with a berth occupier if he is just renting it.
Our marina made that quite clear or else Management would end up with a huge job going around & round in circles.

No i’m not on the Murray.
I think the matter will be sorted this week now that the lovely people of this forum have educated me on a few things.

Re: Berth - Third Party Insurance with Salvage - Australia

Interesting that this topic arose. I am in Brisbane, and marina management asked for similar insurance not long back. I suspect the Marina owners organisation has circulated something to its members, possibly arising from an incident that one of its members had somewhere.

Boats occupying a marina berth will almost invariably be required to have insurance that covers their boat for loss. Often, particularly above a certain size boat there will also be coverage for salvage, wreck removal and environmental cleanup. Any decent insurance will also have third party liability that covers adjacent boats and marina berths.

If you are renting directly to a tenant, then get a copy of their insurance policy and check the wording in particular regarding third party liability. If the tenants are long term, insist on a certificate of currency of their policy each year, keep track of their renewal dates. Then you can provide the marina body corporate with details any time requested.

Never heard of a marina that required anything other than third party property. Why would they care if my boat was insured against loss or not?

I screwed up while editing, third party will probably always be included if you are insured for boat loss. What I meant to indicate was the salvage, wreck removal and enviro clean up is required here in Qld if you are over 50'

Ok, that makes sense. And interesting to see that it is included with my third party insurance from Pantaenius.

Safe Harbors is asking for proof of hull insurance. Makes no sense to me, liability yes but anything more I think is to drive out the older boats.

Weird. Maybe it’s like noted earlier, it’s about the need for wreck removal insurance?

On my third party insurance in Australia salvage cover is listed as a separate (but included) item. Maybe it is different in other countries?

Re: Berth - Third Party Insurance with Salvage - Australia

Having other parties insure items, doesn't cover your risk. It covers the other parties.
In your situation, I would want my name on a policy.

In this case, you are not insuring an item, or its value. You are insuring some ephemeral open ended risk, that may get partially or fully pinned on you.

Re: Berth - Third Party Insurance with Salvage - Australia

There could be a case of getting the required insurance, providing a copy of the current cover and then a week later cancelling the policy for refund. How can the Marina Management ensure THAT doesn't happen?
